It is with deep love and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary Dominic Nowicki, who departed this life peacefully with God by his side on August 1, 2025, at the age of 78. Gary was born on December 24, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan to Dominic and Marjorie Nowicki-a Christmas Eve gift to all who would come to know and love him. A man of faith, quiet strength, and unshakable devotion to family, Gary lived a life marked by humility, hard work, and unwavering love. Gary was the oldest of seven, Leslie Nowicki (preceded in death), Beverly Nowicki, Cynthia Pace (Frank), Lynn McWilliams (David), Randal Nowicki (Kathy), and Julayne Bucec (Bradley preceded in death). He was also a loving uncle to 10 nieces and nephews. Gary served in the Vietnam War as a part of the U.S. Army. He then graduated from Wayne State University in 1972 with a BA in Mass Communication. He continued his life of service with the Knights of Columbus and most recently as an active parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Traverse City. On July 11, 1970, Gary married the love of his life, Phyllis Ann Nowicki (née Doherty). For 55 beautiful years, they shared a life filled with laughter, devotion, and enduring love. Their marriage was more than a union-it was a true partnership built on faith, respect, and joy. Together, they created a warm and spirited home, one that overflowed with love, music, shared meals, and countless happy memories. Life with Phyllis was an adventure Gary cherished deeply, whether they were dancing in the kitchen, cheering on their kids, or simply enjoying a quiet moment side by side. The joy they shared only grew as they raised their children, delighting in every stage-from late-night baby feedings and school activities
to weddings and grandchildren. Their home remained a gathering place, always full of life, laughter, and the comforting sense of belonging. Their love was a light not just to each other, but to everyone blessed to witness it. Gary was a devoted father to six beloved children: Amy Nowicki (who preceded him in death in June 1975), Michael Nowicki (Katie), Jessica Morrison (Jeffrey), Sara Nowicki Gamadia (Kev), David Nowicki (Rachel), and Lilly Clark (Jason). He was a source of strength, laughter, and wisdom in their lives, always leading by quiet example and loving without limits. His joy multiplied with the arrival of his grandchildren, of whom he was immensely proud: Lila, Daniel, Dominic, Reece, Luke, Levi, Ryan, Ally, Grace, and Adam. Whether telling stories, cheering from the sidelines, or simply offering a warm smile and a steady hand, "Papa" was a constant, loving presence in their lives. Gary was a true ray of sunshine-he brought life to any room, gathering, or activity he was part of. His joyful spirit was infectious, and he had a knack for making people feel welcome, seen, and loved. He especially cherished a good laugh and loved telling jokes, even if his delivery wasn't always perfect-something that made them all the more endearing. His sense of humor, paired with his kind heart, made him impossible not to love. Gary's faith was the foundation of his life. He now rests peacefully in God's hands. His journey to meet Jesus was a moment he had long held in his heart with quiet anticipation. For Gary, there was no greater hope than to be reunited with his Heavenly Father and finally be welcomed home. Gary's legacy is one of faith, compassion, and lighthearted joy. He leaves behind not only a family who adored him, but also a community enriched by his gentle spirit, loyal friendship, and enduring generosity. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, August 7 from 4:00-6:00 PM, with a Rosary Service at 5:30 PM, at Beacon Funeral Services, 511 S. Garfield Rd, Traverse City. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 8 at 11:00 AM, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 12675 Center Rd, Traverse City, visitation starting at 10:00 AM. A Christian Burial Service immediately to follow Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gary's name to Catholic Relief Services. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
