Gary Merle Shearman, 84, of Hillsdale, Michigan, passed away with family by his side Saturday, March 1, 2025, in Hillsdale, Michigan. He was born July 29, 1940, to Bertha Margaret (DuBois) Shearman and Ray Merle Shearman in Hillsdale, Michigan.
Gary did many things during his life – Tool and Die maker, farmer, shop manager, small business owner, and paralegal to support his advocacy for individual rights. A constant was his desire to help others in any way he could, including plowing the church parking lot for years and being Cub Master for Troop 277. Never one to sit still, he enjoyed playing recreation league volleyball for many years. He loved to swim and was proud of his ability to swim twice the full length of an Olympic-size pool underwater in one breath. He was a joker who delighted in visiting and talking with people. A proud pilot, Gary took great joy in sharing his love for flying by taking others with him. He had a great way with animals and always loved to have cats around.
Surviving Gary are his children, Kathleen (Bryan) Lewis of Columbus, Indiana and David (Sachiyo) Shearman of New Bern, North Carolina; grandchildren, Natalie and Bethany Lewis, Lisa and Emma Shearman; brother, Jay (Kathleen) Carey of Chandler, Arizona; sister, Jackie Hall of Groveland, Florida; brother-in-law, Randy (Joella) Champion; sister-in-law, Pam (Lynn) Shearman; as well as many cousins, nephews, nieces, and family friends.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Ray Shearman and Bertha (DuBois) Shearman Carey Hall; wife of 61 years Carol (Wolff); daughters, Melanie Shearman and Lynda Shearman, lost in infancy; sister, Joella Champion; brothers, Jan Hall, Tony Haley, Auby Haley, Lynn Shearman; and brother-in-law, Jim (Jackie) Everett.
Visitation will be Monday, March 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
