Gary Herbert Smith | 1934–2025 Gary Herbert Smith, 90, passed away on August 11, 2025, in Taylorsville, Utah, where he returned to the Salt Lake Valley and spent his final days surrounded by family. He was born on October 18, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Orval Edward Smith and Anna Gertrude Smith. Gary married Darlene Malin Smith, and although they later divorced, their years together remained an important part of his life. Life Sketch From an early age, Gary developed a love for cars, especially Cadillacs, as well as boating and waterskiing, often showing off his skills on Bear Lake. In his youth, he played football as a left end and field goal kicker. During high school, he enlisted in the Air National Guard, and in 1955, he proudly joined the Navy. Adventurous at heart, Gary embraced life to the fullest-traveling, camping, river rafting, and exploring the world with family and friends. For the past several decades, he developed a passion for golf and treasured the time spent on the course with friends. He also enjoyed pool and blackjack, always ready for a challenge. Known as "Smitty the Craftsman," Gary lived a life defined by his remarkable woodworking skills and dedication to creating beautiful custom stair railings and timeless works of art. Beyond his craftsmanship, he was known for his famous chocolate chip cookies, comforting pot roast, and the many Super Bowl parties he hosted with laughter and joy. Above all, Gary will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy of kindness, creativity, and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Survived By He is survived by his brother, Orval Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; daughters, Candee Caldwell (Alan Weiner) of Brookfield, CT, Jackie Redmond (Robin Haslam) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Michelle Inglis (James) of South Jordan, UT.
