Gene H Gligorea, a longtime figure in Sheridan, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025, at the age of 95. He was survived by his three children, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, who will miss him dearly.
Born in 1930 in Sheridan, Gene was the second son of George N "Joe" and Anna Gligorea. He attended elementary school at Big Horn and graduated from Sheridan High School. Gene pursued his education at Brigham Young University (BYU) for his freshman year before transferring to the University of Wyoming, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.
In the fall of their senior year, Gene married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Sally Ann Hartwig. After graduation, they embarked on a journey together, starting in Ingomar, MT and continued ranching with a move to Lander, WY. Gene and Sally's desire to be closer to family and Gene's knowledge and love of livestock led them back to Sheridan, where he operated a wool warehouse, was a livestock buyer with an emphasis on ewes and lambs, and alongside his son Calvin Gligorea, owned and operated Sheridan Livestock Sale Barn. In 1998, Gene and Sally made the move to Roswell, NM, where Gene continued to excel in his role as a livestock buyer. After a fulfilling career, he retired and returned to Sheridan in 2021. Gene and Sally shared an incredible 72-year marriage, until Sally's passing in February 2024.
Gene, who was preceded in death by his parents, George N. "Joe" and Anna Gligorea, his brothers George R. Gligorea and Judge Thomas J. Gligorea, his in-laws Myrtle and Adolph "Dutch" Hartwig, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Gretchen Hartwig and Dr. Charles Hartwig, his son-in-law Curt Simmons (Cindy).
Gene is survived by his daughters Carole (John) Weisz of Sheridan, Wyoming, Cindy Simmons of Phoenix, Arizona, and his son Calvin (Mitzi) Gligorea of Des Moines, Washington.
Gene is also survived by his grandchildren Adrienne Loveland, Aaron Weisz, Ashley Estes, Shane Gligorea, Gene Phillip Gligorea, Nicole Simmons, and Drew Simmons, and ten very special great-grandchildren.
Gene cherished good humor, delicious food, and was always eager to engage in a good card game, whether it was a few hands of gin rummy along a dusty road somewhere east of Wyarno or a gathering with friends and family.
Sheridan Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Gene's passing. Per Gene's request a private family service will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation would be a meaningful way to honor Gene's legacy or charity of your choice.
The Gligorea family expresses its deepest gratitude for the loving care and compassionate treatment provided to Gene by Dr. Ferries and the entire staff at Westview Health Care Center.
