George Franklin Brumback, MD, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away

peacefully on August 15, 2025. Born December 26, 1934, in Knoxville, Tennessee, he

was the son of the late Roscoe Lee and Mary Hess Pearson Brumback.

George grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, and later, on a small farm in Linden,

Tennessee, where he raised his beloved pigs, Petunia and Penelope-stories of which he

shared often and fondly. After graduating from Linden High School, his family moved to

Memphis, TN. There, George began his premed studies at Memphis State University,

where he also met and married the love of his life, Bettye Jo Soloman, in what he

described as being "struck by lightning."

George proudly served his country in the United States Navy. To help pay for medical

school, he joined the Navy as an officer and, after completing his medical degree,

served aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (SSBN 600) nuclear submarine from 1961

to 1964. Following his service, he completed an ophthalmology residency at the

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In 1968, George and his family settled in Greensboro, NC, where he joined the Taylor

Clinic and later became a partner in Greensboro Ophthalmology. He was widely

respected as both a skilled surgeon and a compassionate physician, dedicated to the

well-being of his patients.

Outside of medicine, George's passions included gardening, where he was especially

gifted at cultivating roses and vegetables, which he loved to share with friends,

neighbors and co-workers. He was also an avid fisherman who cherished time

outdoors, and treasured family gatherings at the beach house on Oak Island, NC.

Perhaps George is best known for always having a joke at the ready, no matter how bad

it was!

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Bettye Jo Soloman

Brumback, who passed away on October 1, 2015; his daughter, Leeta Brumback, in

1993; his sister, Mary Sue Bjorkland, in 2022 and brother Roscoe Lee Brumback, Jr in

1984.

He is survived by his children, Karl Brumback (Eileen), Mark Brumback (Donna), and

Elizabeth Brumback Eilers (Pat); and his four grandchildren, Matthew Brumback

(Catherine), Mark Brumback (Georgia), Roscoe Brumback, and Delaney Brumback.

George will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to family, his service to others

through medicine, and his generous spirit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rotary Club of

Greensboro or Prevent Blindness North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to be determined.
