George Carter

October 20, 1929 - March 8, 2020

West Nyack, New York - George E. Carter left this world in March 2020, at age 90. Born in N. Little Rock, he grew up in Mayflower, Ark. After high school, he joined the Navy. His nearly four years in the service included live action in the Korean War.

He married Syble Mathis in 1948, and Doris McGilvary in 1959 with whom he had two sons. After his Navy discharge, he worked for Boeing in Wichita, Kan. In 1956 he joined IBM. His 31 years as an IBM'er took him to many locations, including Ariz., Ala., Fla., NC, and multiple locations in NY and Va. He worked on early mainframe computers, domestic air defense systems, the Apollo moon shots, and early home desktop computers (DOS).

A devoted father and friend with a large extended family, he spent 40+ years researching family genealogy. After his retirement at age 57, he spent six months a year driving the country visiting family/friends. After living 43 years in Raleigh, NC, he moved to NY in 2019 to be close to his only grandkids. Always adoring of children, especially babies, he was an avid reader, and an extra-generous, selfless person. An honest and loving, devout Baptist, with a lot of smarts, his huge smile is missed terribly by many.

He was preceded in death by his son Kevin, brothers Earl and Melvin, nephew Melvin Jr., and niece Debbie. He was succeeded in death by his sister Mary, and niece Sharanna. He is survived by his son Art, niece Terri, nephews Danny, David, and Mark, and granddaughters Fiona and Violet. Memorial services will be held Saturday 10 Aug. at First Baptist of Mayflower, followed by burial at the Mayflower Cemetery and a family dinner at the church.
