George Feger, Jr. Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

George F. Feger, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025. He was born on August 6,1938, and grew up in St. Matthews, where his life was shaped by faith, family, and friendships.

George graduated from Flaget High School (class of 1956), and the University of Louisville. He spent most of his career in the corrugated box industry, with many years at St. Joe Container. There, he built lifelong friendships with co-workers and customers alike. Known for his quick wit and love of practical jokes, George brought laughter wherever he went.

George met the love of his life, Mary Ann (Hellmueller), in the 7th grade. Childhood friends turned high school sweethearts. They were married 66 years. Together, they built a loving home raising their four children.

Outside of work, George was a respected high school and college basketball referee, traveling through Southern Indiana and rural Kentucky, forging friendships in every gym he entered. He was also a passionate golfer who cherished time with his golfing buddies, and working at Midland Trail Golf Club in his retirement.

He also supported Alcoholics Anonymous where he mentored and guided many through their journeys.

George's Catholic faith was an anchor throughout his life. His early years were spent at Holy Trinity parish. He was a long-time member of Church of the Ascension, followed by many years at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was a lector at daily Mass at the Cathedral of the Assumption, and he treasured the time spent with friends he met at the welcoming community of the Church of the Annunciation in Shelbyville.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, parents Edna and George Feger, Sr., and sisters Nancy Sidebottom, and Sanda Burton.

George is survived by his children, Joan (Jon) Hamlyn, Chris (Mary) Feger, Tim (Michelle) Feger, and Amy Feger; grandchildren, Ian Hamlyn (Michelle), Emily Sweetra (Patrick), Andrea Straub (Matt), Evan Hamlyn (Lindsey), Matt Feger, Courtney Porter (Bill), Jack Feger (Eileen), Jordan Feger, Erin Feger, Kylie Feger, Tess Welch, Ella Welch, and Anna Welch; as well as great-grandchildren Natalie, Vivian, Wesley, Izzy, Cooper, Eleanor, Scottie, William, and Collins. George is also survived by his brother, Tommy Feger (Fran), and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

His family would like to thank the staff at Belmont Village Senior Living for their excellent and professional care during his time there as a resident.

Visitation will be on Saturday, August 23rd, from 8:30am-10:00am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 501 Cherrywood Rd, Louisville, Kentucky, with the funeral mass at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Flaget Alumni Scholarship Fund, or Hosparus.
