George GRAY Obituary

Published by Horne Funeral & Cremation Svc on Jun. 16, 2013.
George Alexander Gray, 92, of Shawsville, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013, at Lewis-Gale Montgomery Hospital. He was born on April 16, 1921, in Armagh, Northern Ireland, the son of the late William G. and Margaret Allen Gray, and immigrated in 1923 with his family to Long Island, NY, where he grew up. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering at Clarkson College in New York and his Masters and Doctorate in Structural Engineering at Yale University.
During World War II he served four years as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in airfield construction in Europe, including opening up airfields behind Patton as he moved across Germany.
He taught structural engineering at VPI & SU beginning in 1959 and was appointed Associate Dean of Engineering in 1972. After 24 years of service to Virginia Tech he retired in 1984. He served in a number of civic assignments including Blacksburg Building Inspector, the Blacksburg and Montgomery County Planning Commissions, the Montgomery County Courthouse Committee, and he was elected to the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors in 1987 by the luck of the draw after a tie vote.
He was a member of the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church and later the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church after he moved to Shawsville in 1990. In his retirement years he was an active member of the Shawsville community.
He was preceded in death by his loving wives, Marion S. Gray (1982) and Ann Gardner-Gray (2009). He is survived by a son, E. Robert Gray of McHenry, IL; a daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Kellogg of Waynesville, NC; a sister-in-law, Irene Gray; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside service with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Christiansburg, with Dr. Don Makin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Mountain Valley Charitable Foundation, P. O. Box 532, Shawsville, VA 24162. Online condolences may be left by visiting www.hornefuneralservice.com.

We are sorry to learn of Mr. Gray's passing. It was a privilege to know him as he was such an intelligent, caring, kind man who was a gentleman in the truest sense. He was also a most loving and devoted husband to Mrs. Gardner-Gray, and we appreciate the example he set of caring for a spouse in sickness and in health. May God comfort each family member and friend he leaves behind. Our prayers are with those grieving the loss of such a wonderful man.

Robert and Margaret...I was so sorry to read about your Dad's death in the paper. He and my late husband, Bob Heterick, were not only professor/grad. student, but friends. He was Bob's the major professor when he was working on his PhD, and they taught together for several years. He was Godfather to our son Bruce, and your Mother taught piano to one of our daughters. I remember many nights we would see the lights from our home on Owens St. in your Dad's "man cave" working on or grading
papers. They took several trips together to present papers and Bob felt that your Dad was the one who convinced him to go into teaching. Maybe they have met again after all these years and are building a structure for the heavens. My deepest sympathy to all your family.

George Gray was a gentleman and a great friend. He was kind and generous. His amazing love and care for Ann was an example not easily matched anywhere. We were privileged to know him and to spend time with him over the years. May God's special peace and comfort be with each family member and friend. Hold to your many memories.
