George Edward Konopa, loving patriarch of his family, sadly passed away at his home in Beloit, Wisconsin, on November 9th, 2022, at the age of 81, after a long struggle with renal failure.
George was born on June 11, 1941, to Frank and Leona Konopa in Arpin, Wisconsin. After graduating from Beloit Catholic High School in 1959, he served in the Army for three years. In 1961, George married Nancy Meives, whom he had met when they were both 16. She remembered seeing him being crowned as the 5th grade Merrill School marble champion years before. George learned to be a master woodworker while working at Grommes Millwork. He used this talent and his entrepreneurial spirit to become a small business owner, running Custom Awards, Inc., manufacturing trophy bases and plaques for thirty years.
George enjoyed the outdoors. He was a skilled gardener, fisherman, camper, hunter, and trapper. More than anything, he enjoyed time with his family, especially the babies and children. George will always be remembered by his warm hugs and his sense of humor and silly "dad jokes".
George leaves behind his devoted wife, Nancy Konopa, and their children Terri (Dave) Gile of Beloit, Wisconsin, Paul (Charlotte) Konopa of Greenville, Wisconsin, and Brad (Juli) Konopa of Greenville, Wisconsin; two brothers, Lee (Barb) Konopa of Berryville, Virginia, and Jerry (Debe) Konopa of Beloit, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren, Brian (Michele), Alex, Melissa (Jordan), Jessica, Allison (Cody), Nathan, Mallory, Jada (Kevin), Brenna, Macy; and 4 great grandchildren, Brooklynn, Jaedyn, Jack, Rory. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard (Pat) Konopa of Anderson, IN, and Tony (Ann) Konopa of Frankfort, Indiana.
A celebration of George's life will be planned. The family would like to thank Jacque, RN and the rest of the Beloit Regional Hospice staff for their wonderful care in his final months.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2022, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 822 East Grand Avenue, Beloit, Wisconsin 53511 with Reverend Fr. John Hedrick and Mark Maxted officiating. Following the service there will be a reception in the church hall from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home, 424 Prospect Street, Beloit, Wisconsin 53511 is honored to be assisting the family.
