Georgette Arceneaux Alleman died peacefully at home on July 31, 2024. She was born on January 8, 1933, in Lafayette, LA. In 1951, she graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in Lafayette, and in 1955, she graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now UL Lafayette). Before moving to Lake Charles, she was an active member of St. Genevieve Catholic Church, participating in the St. Genevieve Choir and the Legion of Mary. In addition, she taught CCD classes at St. Genevieve and started the parish’s first CCD classes for the intellectually disabled.

Georgette was passionate about teaching. She started her career at St. Genevieve Elementary in Lafayette. After she married Herbert Joseph Alleman of Rayne, LA, in 1962 and moved to Lake Charles, she began teaching at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Elementary School, where she also taught CCD. After she retired, she continued to serve as a substitute teacher for OLQH and Immaculate Conception Catholic School. She later became a long-time volunteer reading tutor for the Literacy Council of Lake Charles. She particularly enjoyed being a tutor trainer and conducting training workshops for new tutors, including ESL tutors.

Georgette was a devoted Catholic and longstanding member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church where she was a member of the choir for 7 AM Mass. Aside from her love of teaching and the church, Georgette loved her family above all. She and her husband of 52 years raised three amazing, well-rounded children who possess a slightly dark sense of humor. She prayed a lot and often joked that God must get tired of hearing her thank him for blessing her with such a wonderful family. Georgette truly loved selflessly and laughed easily and often. The sun shines a little less brightly now that she is gone.

She is survived by one son, Michael Alleman (Angela) of Lafayette, who thinks he is the favorite: two daughters, Rebecca “Becki” Chaisson (Marc) of Lake Charles, who claims she is the favorite, and Emily Wharton (David) of Baton Rouge, who is the true favorite; two brothers, Leon Arceneaux, Jr. of the Woodlands, TX, and her beloved twin, George Arceneaux of Lafayette; and three brilliant grandchildren: Whitman Alleman, Ashlin Wharton, and Madison Wharton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon Arceneaux, Sr. and Emily DeBlanc Arceneaux; one son, Matthew Alleman; the love of her life, Herbert Alleman; and her two sisters Emily “MeMe” Arceneaux and Therese Arceneaux. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her name to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of the Monastery of Mary, Mother of Grace in Lafayette.

Graveside services will be Sunday, August 4, 2024 at Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Deacon Harold Nixon will officiate. Visitation Sunday will be from 12:00 PM until 1:45 PM in the funeral home.
