Gerald Lee (Jerry) Stevens, Sergeant First Class, US Army Retired, 66, of Williamsport, MD, passed away Friday, January 31, 2025.
Born July 23, 1958, in
Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late William Elmer Stevens and the late Lois Joan (Heefner) DeNobrega.
He was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School, Class of 1976, and served as a member of their reunions committee. He attended HCC, Hagerstown; FTCC, Fayetteville, NC; and; the University of Maryland (European Division).
He was employed as a civil servant with the US Coast Guard, National Vessel Documentation Center of Falling Waters, WV. He retired after 20 years of active duty with the US Army as a Senior Paralegal NCO, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Carlisle Barracks, PA. His previous duty assignments and deployments took him to Ludwigsburg, Germany; Fort Bragg, NC; Fort George G. Meade, MD; Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Haiti; Sinai, Egypt; and, The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, Charlottesville, VA. He also served in Co D, 58th Support Battalion, MDARNG, Hagerstown; 10th Military Law Center, USAR, Upper Marlboro, MD; and, Long Range Surveillance Detachment, 104th Armored Cavalry Regiment, PAARNG, Chambersburg, PA. His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Government of Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Government of Kuwait), Combat Infantry Badge, Parachutists Badge, Australian Parachutists Badge, and Air Assault Badge.
He was formerly employed as a civil servant by IRS, Kearneysville and Martinsburg, WV; US Census Bureau, Hagerstown; TJAGLCS, Charlottesville; LRSD, 104th ACR, PAARNG, Chambersburg; US Army, OSJA, Fort Ritchie, MD; US Army, Headquarters Command Battalion, USAG, Fort Meade; and, the C&O Canal NHP, Sharpsburg, MD.
He was also formerly employed as a civilian contractor as the Legal Support Specialist Senior Mentor/Trainer with Engility-Commando Corporation (formerly MPRI), Camp Morehead, Afghanistan; and, as the Legal Administrator for the Office of the Prosecutor for The Special Court for Sierra Leone, Freetown.
He is survived by his wife Sylvia Stevens of Williamsport; two daughters Jeri Renee Elkins of Palmetto, FL, and Suzan Cole and husband Andrew of Williamsport; a brother Stephen E Heefner and wife Anita of Hagerstown; four sisters L Diane Graham and husband Kirk of Williamsport, Laura A. Minnick and husband James of Hagerstown, Barbara Lynn Stevens of Hopkinsville, KY, and Nickole Stevens of Hagerstown; two granddaughters Ivy Hannah Faraimo of Fayetteville, NC, and Nevaeh Elkins of El Paso, TX; two grandsons Dillon Lowery and wife Tracy of Fayetteville, and Christopher Elkins Jr of El Paso; two great-grandsons Braxton and Dakota Lowery, and a great-granddaughter Vivian Faraimo, all of Fayetteville; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends around the world.
He was preceded in death by two nieces.
He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church of Hagerstown. He also was a life member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association of Central PA; the DAV Chapter 14 of Hagerstown; the Harley Owner's Group, and the Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84 of Williamsport; a paid up for life member of the American Legion Post 202 of Williamsport; and the Goodwill Athletic Club of Hagerstown; and, he was a member of the Alsatia Club of Hagerstown.
Services will be Friday, February 7, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd North in Hagerstown. Chaplain Lindsey E. Arnold, US Army will officiate. Burial will be at Broadfording Church Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
