Gertrude or "Mac" as she was affectionately known was born in Hastings Minnesota on June 24th 1935. Her parents were Howard "Jack" Ryan and Margaret Coen Ryan. She was preceded in death by her brother Thomas Ryan and sisters Mary Postier and Patricia Christensen. She was also preceded in death by her ex husband and good friend James McAtee.
Gert graduated from Pine Island High School. She worked at Community Hospital East from 1957 to 1961. She then took a break to raise her family. After raising her family she returned to school and received her nursing license from Indianapolis School of Practical Nursing. In 1976 she went back to Community Hospital East working in Neurology until retiring in 1997. She continued to work part time at Community Hospital for several more years.
Gert was known for her humor and kindness. She always had a nurses heart and was willing to help anyone in need. She loved flower gardening, fishing, hosting family events and bird watching. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends especially domino nights. She enjoyed traveling the world with her good friend Elsie Britton, daughter Lisa, son in law Don and close friends. She enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Emily McMahon and great granddaughter Hannah McMahon.
Gert is survived by her daughters Lisa (Don) Britton and Barb McAtee, granddaughter Emily McMahon, great granddaughter Hannah McMahon and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation Friday July 25th from 4 pm until 7 pm at Oakley Hammond Mortuary, 5342 East Washington St. Indianapolis IN 46219.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday July 26th at 10 am at Little Flower Catholic Church 4720 East 13th Street Indianapolis IN 46201. Burial to follow at Washington Park East Cemetery 10612 East Washington Street Indianapolis IN 46229.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Mac to the Alzheimer's Association or Little Flower Catholic Church.
