***************Change of Services************* With apologies, more than half of the family has contracted Influenza Type A and must re-schedule the visitation to next Monday, February 17th from 4-8 PM and the Funeral Mass to Tuesday, February 18th at 10AM at St. James in Carmel.******************
Gertrude A. Mercurio of Carmel, NY and formerly of Harrison, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on August 29, 1930, in Elizabeth, NJ, daughter of the late Angelo and Jessie (neé Capece) Fortunato. On April 9, 1953 she married the late Ignatius Mercurio and they were blessed with a son Christian. Gertrude's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and togetherness.
Gertrude was the patriarch of her family. She was a master of the Sunday dinner, a tradition that ensured her loved ones were always connected. Her culinary skills were only matched by her ability to fill a room with song. In her younger years, Gertrude's voice graced the stage of the old Continental in White Plains, where she shone as a night club singer, enchanting patrons for many years.
Her family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her devoted son Chris and his wife Tina; her adoring grandchildren, Jessica, Nicole, and Christian, who will carry her legacy forward with the stories and values she instilled in them.
Gertrude's evenings were marked by a unique sleep ritual – a little sip of Old Smuggler Scotch, a habit she humorously credited for her longevity. Her spirit, a blend of resilience and tenderness, made her a formidable Scrabble opponent and card player, she delighted in the friendly competition and camaraderie these activities brought.
