Gertrude Helen Perz was born Jan 16, 1965 in Queens, New York to parents Raimund and Frida Tomitz Perz. When Gert was a child, her family moved to Wallkill, where Gert attended school. After graduating high school, she was employed at Gateway Industries in New Paltz and later Kingston for many years. She was always very proud of the paychecks she earned for her work.
While at Gateway, Gert relished the time spent with her friends in activities offered by the Day Hab Program. Gert enjoyed life with her parents, eagerly helping with yardwork and pitching in wherever she could. She enjoyed social activities and weekend trips with her parents and their friends. Some of her grandest times were during her later years in Kingston, living with her friends Gary and Leslie and their dog Scotty. Most recently, Gert was a resident at Palmer House in Kingston where she continued to enjoy social activities, crafts, and movies with other residents.
Gert was a friend to all she met, always ready with a quick smile and a bright flash of her eyes. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, as well as crafts, singing, watching movies, and listening to music. Most of all Gert enjoyed being with people. Gert was proud to be an aunt to Matthew, showering him with affection and always supportive of him and his endeavors. She was the loving sister of Elizabeth, always believing that her big sister could overcome any obstacle. Gert is survived by her sister Elizabeth, her nephew Matthew, and a number of cousins.
Gert died peacefully in the familiar surroundings of her home at Palmer House. Gert's family is grateful for the kind and compassionate care she received from the numerous staff members there
A Mass will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 10:30am at Most Precious Blood Church, 42 Walnut St., Walden, NY 12586. Burial will follow at Wallkill Valley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Gert be made to the Day Hab Program at Gateway Community Industries, 1 Amy Kay Parkway, Kingston, NY 12401.
