Gertrude Ann Thomas, affectionately known as " Miss Ann", a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend to many. Gertrude was born on November 20, 1950, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late John and Merlese Edwards. She peacefully transitioned on June 11, 2025, at the age of 74.
She attended William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City New Jersey, before beginning her career at Speedmark Warehouse in Secaucus, New Jersey, where she worked as a Product Organizer for over 15 years. Motivated by a deep heart for service, Gertrude later became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), dedicating over 15 years to Harborview Nursing Home and eventually serving as a head CNA at Saint Ann's Nursing Home in Jersey City. Her compassion, leadership, and excellence in caregiving left a lasting impact on the lives of her patients and colleagues alike.
In 1992, Gertrude married the late Edward Thomas, they were married for 9 years. In 1998, she gave her life to Christ and became a faithful member of New Life in Christ Regional Worship Center-now Vibrant Church in East Brunswick, New Jersey-under the leadership of Pastors Kevin and Crystal Pleasant. Her life was a testimony of faith, love, and selfless service.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her siblings Julius Stanford, Shirley, Diane, and John Edwards. She is survived by her loving siblings Theresa and Anita Edwards; her devoted children, Althea Woodyard (Herschel Woodyard Jr.), Chenel Broadway, Shawn Edwards, and Kenya Edwards-Greene (Dave Greene); and her cherished grandchildren, Shawnize Jackson, Jasmine and Monay Woodyard, Brian II, Breyani, and Brielle Grant, as well as Xavier, Shawn Jr., and Yasmira Edwards. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Si Quran and Ezekiel Dees and a host of extended family and friends. Gertrude journeyed through life with love and friendship, sharing many treasured years with her best friend Kathy Mason.
Gertrude had a contagious laugh and a radiant personality that drew people in. She loved watching her favorite movies and soap operas, and she found joy in laughter, card games, and meaningful time with her family and friends. She was known for her confidence, authenticity, and the genuine way she showed up in the world, always unapologetically herself.
Gertrude Ann Thomas leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering faith. She will be remembered for her warm heart, resilient spirit, and the love she poured into her family, church, and everyone blessed to know her. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will forever be a treasure. Gertrude was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
