It is with great respect and admiration that we remember Anthony Joseph DeSando Jr. Born on January 26th 1944 in Hoboken, New Jersey, he passed at the age of 80 on December 6th, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.
The son of Mary and Anthony DeSando who came to America from Caserta, Campania Italy and Patti, Messina Sicily, Anthony grew up in Jersey City with two siblings, Janet and David. His family gave him the childhood nickname of Butchie. He was an athletic, handsome young man raised in the Catholic faith. A quarterback for his high school football team, his favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys. He also graced the bowling lanes in his silver shoes in a bowling league with his father, Anthony Sr.
Anthony graduated from William L. Dickinson High School, and he took up the trade of cosmetology at Fine Arts Beauty Academy in Jersey City, graduating in 1962. He swiftly turned his vision into reality, founding the first Mimmo Anton Salon in 1963 and opening a second salon by 1965, marking the beginning of a distinguished career.
Anthony's visionary approach led to the creation of Natural Motion, a revolutionary teaching method. He authored several key textbooks and video instruction materials that would become staples in cosmetology education. In 1970, he established the first advanced training center for licensed stylists, and his achievements as a competition hairstylist were widely recognized, winning numerous national and international accolades. He served as a member of the USA Olympic Styling Team, winning Gold.
His talents also graced television screens during the Styling Olympics, and at trade shows throughout the years.
Under his leadership, Natural Motion flourished, acquiring Caprice Beauty Academy in 1976 and expanded to three additional locations in Bloomfield, Union, and Ocean Township New Jersey. His influence reached far and wide, with his materials being utilized in over 50 schools across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
Anthony was a long time member of Intercoiffure, an invitation only international organization of the most talented and prestigious members of the beauty profession. Members set standards of excellence launching new trends in hair, beauty, and fashion.
In a career milestone, the Natural Motion Group merged with Regis Corp in 2004, and under Anthony's management it expanded into a network of 51 schools. At this time Anthony and his wife Lisa founded Salon DeSando in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Regis Corp merged with Empire Education in 2007 and saw further expansion to 120 schools in over 21 states. He retired from the company in 2010, but continued his work at Salon DeSando providing his creative expertise as a beloved business owner and stylist. He will be greatly missed by his many devoted clients.
Anthony's most cherished role was as a family man. He was the beloved husband of Lisa for 34 years. He was a dedicated parent to four children: Anthony III (wife Bridgit) and Matthew (from his marriage to Anna Marie Testa Newton), and his children with Lisa, Nicole (fiancé Jordan) and Alec.
He cherished his role as grandfather to his son Anthony's daughter Magdala ("Lala"). All of them carry on his creative artistic legacy. His memory is also cherished by his sister Janet and brother-in-law Charlie, his brother David and sister-in-law Nancy, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Anthony enjoyed gardening with his wife, creating a beautiful home and landscape. He was also a talented artist who loved painting. He was an avid golfer and member of the Ashbrook Men's Golf Association. He and his friends had a tee time every Sunday morning. The family cat Cali (who Anthony picked out) brought him so much joy and comfort for the past five years.
In 2019, Anthony fulfilled a lifelong dream with a memorable trip to Italy, a tribute to his roots which held a special place in his heart, and passion for life's beauty. Anthony loved Italian cuisine and his mother's recipes. He continued the art of baking cream puffs in his Mom's memory.
Known for his artistic style, handsome features, and calming presence, he was a man with a big heart. He had an unwavering support for his family, friends, neighbors, and clients. Truly a benevolent soul, he guided his family by example, leaving behind a path blessed by love and professional excellence.
Anthony's passing leaves a profound absence, yet the love and memories shared endure as a testament to the wonderful man he was. As we bid farewell to Anthony, we remember a life well-lived, marked by extraordinary achievements and deeply felt connections. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, a testament to a life dedicated to artistry, family, and love.
Family and friends may gather from 4-8 PM on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at Memorial Funeral Home, located at 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, NJ 07023.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM on Friday, December 13, 2024 at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, Scotch Plains.
