Susan Ann Szeigis (nee Hanlon) of Wall Township, NJ passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at HMH Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune Township, NJ surrounded by her loving family. Susan was born on September 14, 1948, at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, NJ to Florence and Frank Hanlon. She was raised in Jersey City with her 4 siblings on Randolph and Kensington Avenue. While attending St. Aloysius Grammar School in Jersey City, Susan enjoyed rooting for the school's football team as Captain of the Cheerleading Squad, ice skating at the Roosevelt Stadium Ice Rink and summer vacations in Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ. At William L. Dickinson High School, she was a member of the Color Guard and during lunchtime would often walk to the Hudson County Court House where her mother was a court attendant to have lunch with her and sit in on interesting cases. Her father, Frank, always used to delight in telling everyone about his daughter Susan's prowess with a pool cue after she finished first in a 25-week tournament with a 20-5 ledger, he was very proud!
After graduation from DHS in 1966, Susan went to work as an executive secretary at the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, NJ. In 1970, she became administrative assistant to the president of the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce where she worked until the birth of her first child in 1980. In 1996, when her youngest child started first grade, Susan went back to work at the Wall Township Public Schools as a Paraprofessional primarily one on one with children with special needs. Her kindness and patience made her especially suited for this role, where she stayed until her retirement in 2018. Susan married Robert W. Szeigis in 1977 and lived in Bayonne and Jersey City until 1991, when they relocated to Wall Township, fulfilling their dream of raising their children at the Jersey Shore. The greatest joy for both Susan and Robert was spending time with their family and particularly enjoying the backyard pool.
Susan is preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert, her parents Frank and Florence (Wright) and her sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Edward Maguire. She is survived by her adoring daughters Suzanne Vetrano (Nicholas), Stephanie Prol (Timothy) and Sharon (Drew Doyle), her loving grandchildren Nicholas and Michael Vetrano, Ella and Ava Prol who will miss their dearest Mom-Mom; her siblings Ellen Garback (late Michael), Frank (Sarael), Virginia Finn (David) and 13 nieces and nephews and 21 grandnieces & nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday May 14, 2025, from 5-8 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Rd., Manasquan, NJ 08736. As no funeral was possible when Susan's husband passed in 2020 during CoVid, there will be a Mass of Christian Burial for both Susan and Robert on Thursday May 15, 2025, at 10:30 am at St Rose Church 603 7th Avenue Belmar, NJ.
