Gloria Joy Reichenbach Hill was born on December 25, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to Harold Christ Reichenbach and Ellen (Singer) Reichenbach. Gloria had one older sister, Betty Ellen Hoose. Gloria's family resided in Chicago until Gloria was in third grade, when the family purchased a small laundry and moved to Vincennes, Indiana.
In Vincennes, Gloria became involved in a local church and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. She also developed a love for music. This began with piano lessons, followed by organ lessons and high school band. Gloria later became a church pianist and organist.
Gloria attended DePauw University. Six days after her graduation, she married her college sweetheart, Herbert Noble Hill. Herb and Gloria moved to Indianapolis, where they raised their family. Herb became a Family Practice physician, and Gloria became a history teacher. Herb and Gloria were blessed with three children: Robert Hill (Ginger), Maureen Watson, and Laura Metcalfe. Gloria's children remember her as deeply devoted, always interested in their activities, and willing to support them in any way necessary. Gloria was a force! Any organization she joined was made better by her involvement. She was exacting, encouraging, and energetic.
God blessed Herb and Gloria with six grandchildren: Stephanie Anna Hill, Matthew Thomas Hill (Nikita), John David Watson (Katelyn), Kara Ellen Metcalfe (Sam Nesmith), Alexander James Watson, and Andra Kathleen Metcalfe. In 2024, a great-grandchild, Zion Samuel Hill, was born. Gloria loved spending time with each of her grandchildren and had specific bonds with each, hosting birthday parties for stuffed animals, sharing a passion for the Indiana Pacers, being an F.C. Singers show choir groupie, and vacationing together to all kinds of places. Gloria loved her people!
Gloria was a Bible Study Fellowship Teaching Leader for 25 years. She touched many lives. When her health required her to step away from this position, she began to teach a Bible Study at Greenwood Village South. When she could no longer teach, Gloria identified her mission as being an encourager. In her final months, as her health declined dramatically, she sought to encourage and minister to her caregivers.
Gloria battled Multiple Myeloma for more than 20 years. She fought her disease valiantly. She maintained her hope and her faith. In her last days, her children asked her what "final words" she would wish to share. This was her response: "I believe the purpose God gave me for my life was to grow in Christlikeness and to live a life that would bring praise and glory to Him. He meant for me to help others to find Him and grow in their faith by sharing with them how He has made His Word alive in my life." We, her family, can think of no better words to describe her. She will be sorely missed, but we know that we, and many others, have been blessed by her prayers, her love, and her example.
A celebration of Gloria's life will be held at Mt. Auburn Church (3100 W. Stones Crossing Rd, Greenwood) at 10AM on Monday, September 1, with a brief visitation from 9-10AM before the service. There will also be visitation on Sunday, August 31, from 6-8PM at Singleton & St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, 7602 Madison Ave, Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to your local church or to Bible Study Fellowship in Gloria's memory.
