Grace C. "Gaye" Walsh, beloved mother, passed away peacefully at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Plymouth, on January 15, 2024, at the age of 87, surrounded by her family. She will be remembered as a caring wife, mother, sister, and friend. Her smile, compassion, love of her family and zest for life will be greatly missed by all.
She was born in Boston to Bartholomew and Annie (Margery) McHugh. She grew up in a large and close-knit family. She enjoyed dancing with her sisters, Sunday roasts cooked by her father, and Nelson Eddy and Jeannette MacDonald movies with her sister Mary. Summering at Cape Cod with her sisters, she met her fun-loving husband, Vincent, "Vinnie". They were married for over 58 years. She was a beloved mother to her three children, John, Valerie, and Bart.
After graduating from Monsignor Ryan High School in Dorchester, she worked in Insurance. Gaye and Vincent moved their young family to the south shore. Gaye turned her attention to becoming an excellent cook (emulating Julia Child), gardener, and knitter. She instilled in her children strong ethics, closeness, and a love of life. After raising her children, she worked in banking at Plymouth Home National Bank. Furthering her education, she took night classes in business while employed at the Bank of New England then became an Operations Manager for State Street Bank, from which she retired, which was the favorite part of her career.
Gaye enjoyed entertaining her colleagues at her home and the camaraderie they all had. Throughout it all she loved spending time with her family. She also loved properly arranged flowers, dinner at a nice restaurant, the second table they sat her at, a good glass of wine, a funny joke, animals, and being by the water. Although she spent most of her life in Massachusetts, Gaye and Vinnie lived in Florida for 10 years enjoying warmer weather and their dog Andre.
Gaye leaves behind her three children, John, Valerie and Bart. She is survived by her sister Cecilia McHugh, and her niece Annie (Ken) Costa. She is predeceased by her husband Vinnie and dear brothers and sisters Patrick, Thomas, Mary, John, and Anne.
Visiting hours will be held at the Sullivan Funeral Homes, 551 Washington Street, Route 53, Hanover, on Sunday from 1-4 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Angels Parish - Saint Mary's Church, 392 Hanover Street, Route 139, Hanover, on Monday at 9 AM. Burial to follow at Pembroke Center Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the ASPCA in memory of Gaye Walsh.
