Mr. Grady Gene Metcalfe “Gene”, age 93 of Macon, GA, went home to be with the Lord our Savior on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, two weeks after his beloved wife, Irma Britton Metcalfe went home to be with the Lord.
Born July 20, 1930, in Shelby, NC, Gene was the son of the late William Grady Metcalfe and Erie Iola Spangler. He was proceeded in death by a daughter, Janice Metcalfe, brothers, Q. H. Metcalfe II (Nell), Don Metcalfe (Audrey-living), Billie Metcalfe and sisters Evelyn McCarver (Buddy), Irene Shephard (Authur) and Mary Ann Hamrick (Scott).
Gene married Irma Glenn Britton on June 8,1957 and treasured her for 66 years. Gene graduated valedictorian of Piedmont High School, Lawndale NC, graduated Kings Business College in Charlotte, NC and attended Macon State College in Macon, Georgia. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He retired from General Motors Acceptance Corporation after 41 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy four years and was honorably discharged in 1955. He loved studying the Bible, teaching Sunday School and MasterLife. He loved making jokes and teasing those around him. He never seemed to meet a stranger. He loved spending time with his family, taking vacations, cooking new recipes, competing and playing games. Gene and Irma attended Zion Baptist Church when living in Shelby, NC and attended Tattnall Square Baptist Church in Macon, GA. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his children and grandchild whom he loved dearly, Gini Ellis (Don) and Douglas Metcalfe (Kay) of Macon, GA and Deanna Metcalfe of Atlanta, GA, and only grandchild Brittany Ellis of Marietta, GA. Also surviving is his late brother Don’s wife Audrey Metcalfe and their children Donna of MA and Tim of NC and his late sister Mary Ann Hamrick’s (Scott-late) children, Stanley and Billy Hamrick of Virginia, his brother Q.H. Metcalfe II (Nell-late) child, Harold Metcalfe (Debbie) and their children Cory and Casey, and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service for both Gene and his wife Irma will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Zion Baptist Church in Shelby, NC, conducted by Dr. Jim McConnell.
