It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend.
Gregory Thomas Galati was born on June 3, 1961, in Portland, OR, and passed away on May 13, 2025, in Hayward, CA, at the age of 63. Between those dates, he was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother; a dedicated therapist for clients requiring advanced support and care; and an enthusiastic participant in all things kind.
Greg attended All Saints Catholic School and served as an altar boy with dreams of becoming a bishop. At Central Catholic High School, he was awarded the "Christ the King" award and was the valedictorian of his graduating class at Santa Clara University.
After almost ten years in the admissions office of Santa Clara University, Greg returned to school to become a therapist. He attended the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (now Sophia University) and was licensed to be an MFT in 1996. His practice was heavily influenced by the intersection of spirituality and psychology, which informed much of his adult life.
Greg met his future wife of twenty-five years, Colleen, at his MFT licensing party. Colleen remembers thinking on that night that she might have met her future husband. Greg and Colleen welcomed two sons, Aidan in 2002 and Benjamin in 2005. Every day, he made up games and stories for them and was incredibly proud of the men his boys became.
Greg spent seventeen years working in the Kaiser Adult Intensive Outpatient Program. He retired in 2022, after which he devoted himself to his private practice and found a passion in working with couples. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and was an amazing therapist who changed so many lives.
Greg was awarded the 2010 Hayward Mayor's Award for his tireless community service. He founded a program that gathered local families to pick up litter around South Hayward every other Saturday. He collaborated with City Councilman (now Mayor) Mark Salinas to provide free breakfasts for every family that participated, and worked with the Hell's Angels to provide toys for the families at the holidays. Further, he canvassed the neighborhood to tell neighbors that the City of Hayward would plant trees in front of their houses for free.
He is survived by his wife Colleen, his sons Aidan and Benjamin, his mother Joan, his siblings Steve (Karyn) and Maria (Dave Markowitz), along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joachim Catholic Church, 21250 Hesperian Blvd, Hayward, CA 94541, at 11:30AM.
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, there will be a Celebration of Life for Greg at 1:00PM at Mission Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Cole Hall, 2950 Washington Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Moreau Catholic High School's tuition assistance program in Hayward, please note that donations are made "in memory of Greg Galati" or to the Sierra Club.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to read of Greg's passing. I knew him from my years at Santa Clara University, where he was a year younger than me. We joined together through the Santa Clara Community Action Program to go every Saturday to visit the developmentally-disabled adults at that time at Agnews State Hospital, and to host a Mass for them in the SCU Mission Church. I have many fond memories of our time together at SCU. He was a man of integrity, kindness and great Christian faith. I send my heartfelt condolences to Colleen and his two sons, who gave him extreme happiness. I am so glad I got to see him a few years ago at brunch with his other 1983 SCU classmates, Tom and Dave. May he rest in peace.

I consider myself very lucky to have spent time on the earth with Greg. He was kind, thoughtful, and a true holder of space. When my lifelong friend Colleen introduced me to Greg and their boys, I knew this was a family filled with love and true connection. My favorite memories are the songs and poems and shows Greg and the boys created for his dear Colleen. May his memory always be a blessing, just as he was with all of us.
