Helen Jean (Cody) Helgeland, Age 92, of Ames formally Nevada and Mccallsburg IA passed away at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, IA on Sunday, September 1, 2024. Her service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Heartland Baptist Church in Ames, IA. A private family burial will follow in McCallsburg at the Warren Township Cemetery.
She was born September 26, 1931, in Ames, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas Tony and Elsie Mae (Osborne) Cody. She grew up and received her education in Ames. Helen was united in marriage to Osmund Helgeland. The couple made their home on a farm north of McCallsburg and was blessed with four children. They later divorced.
Helen had several jobs over the years, Including Mary Greeley, Breadeaux pizza, retired from Donnelley Marketing in 1992. After retiring she went to work at ChildServe in Ames helping with the toddlers and later enjoyed rocking the babies during feedings. She enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzle books, baking, she was a big fan of sports especially ISU, Kanas City Chiefs, St Louis Cardinals. She loved making Norwegian food for the holidays for her kids and grandkids such as Kumla, Fish, Ludifisk and Lufsa,
Kringla, Krumkaker. She always asked if you were ready for Pie as soon as the main meal was over and no one was hungry for desert yet. Everyone always got laugh out of it. Helen will be remembered as a woman who liked socializing and was always willing to lend a helping hand to all. She was a member of the Heartland Baptist Church in Ames.
Helen is survived by her four children: John (Sandy) of Zearing, IA, Ron of Cedar Rapids, IA, Kathy Akey of Bradenton, FL, Don (Melanie) of Colo, IA. 11 grandchildren and their significant others, 17 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Sue Gould of Marshalltown IA and many nieces, nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters: Opal Fisher, Ruth Cody, Evelyn Cody, Dorothy Yancey, 2 brothers: Frederick "Bud" Cody and Bill Cody. A son in law Lynn Akey and one grandchild.
Fredregill Funeral Home of Zearing has been entrusted with the care of Helen and her famliy.
