Helen "Dolly" Marshall passed away peacefully at The Grandell Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Long Beach, NY, on June 10. She was 85 years old.
Helen is survived by her eighteen beloved nieces and nephews, their spouses, and children, as well as her sisters-in-law, Lee and Alice. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Bernard and Alice, her brothers, Peter and his wife Josephine (Chester, CT), Bernard (Oceanside, NY), and Thomas (Rockville Centre, NY) as well as her niece, Anne Marshall, and her nephews, Father Joseph Marshall and Brendan Marshall.
Helen was born on February 11, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY to Bernard and Alice. She grew up in Ozone Park, NY with her mother and brothers, losing her father at an early age. She graduated from St. Joseph Commercial High School as an accounting secretary, working for several firms before accepting a position at the Law Offices of Kelley, Drye & Warren LLP in New York City where she worked for more than 40 years. After retiring from "Kelley, Drye" Helen went to work as a secretary at St. John's University and served as a Eucharistic Minister, delivering communion at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. In 1986, she took perpetual vows in the Blessed Trinity Missionary Institute, dedicating her life to God as a consecrated lay person.
Helen was deeply involved in the lives of her brothers and their families on Long Island and in Connecticut, forming close, life-long bonds with her nieces and nephews as they grew up, and later with their children. She regularly visited, vacationed, and often camped with her extended family members. Her nieces and nephews and all her friends and family remember "Aunt Dolly" fondly, as an extraordinarily faithful, kind, and fun-loving person, freely offering her love and support to all.
Visitation or Helen's "Wake" is scheduled on Monday, June 16, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Macken Mortuary in Rockville Centre, NY, and a funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 at 9:45am at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre, NY followed by a burial at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Helen's life.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association at 225 Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at The Grandell Rehabilitation & Nursing Center for their wonderful care of Helen over these last ten years.
