Henry Stoney "Hank" Mather

Canandaigua - Henry "Hank" Stoney Mather, age 86, passed away peacefully, on January 18, 2024. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Nicholas DiMaria; two nieces, Deborah DiMaria (James Mussaw) and Michele DiMaria; many great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Ann DiMaria; niece, Sheryl Peck; and great-niece, Amanda Peck.
Hank grew up in Canandaigua and was the son of George "Bud" and Adele (Stoney) Mather. He was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy, class of 1955, and was class salutatorian. He was also class president and lettered in football, swimming, track and tennis. Hank went on to receive his bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester, where he lettered in football and was a member of the Senior Men's Honorary Society. He earned his master's degree in history from Columbia University. In 1961, Hank served overseas as an intelligence officer for the US Air Force. He later earned his law degree from Cornell Law School and practiced law in Rochester. Hank was a law professor for the University of South Carolina for many years, from where he retired in 2002.
He was a resident of West Lake Road on Canandaigua Lake and had a great love for the lake, sailing, kayaking, swimming and ice cream. A world traveler who enjoyed the arts and culture and loved sharing his experiences with family and friends. Hank will be greatly missed.
His memorial service will be held Friday, January 26, at 11 am, at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua.
