Herbert William Smart was born December 19, 1938 to parents Robert and Ruby Smart at their home in Florence, Texas. Herbert lived in the same home for many years so he could help his mother care for his father Robert Smart until his death.
He graduated from Florence High School and was the president of his high school reunion class. After graduation he went on to graduate from the University of Texas earning his bachelor's degree. Herb worked for the Texas Department of Transportation Material & Test Division in the paint section. He was lead inspector for paint manufacture division. The paint was made by various companies in the United States. These paints were used for roadway markings and bridge coatings. Later, in his forty years with TxDot, he worked with Department Districts on application problems with coatings. His career often kept him away from family on the road, but he always came home to the little white house on the hill.
After he retired, he continued living in the same little white house on the hill until his health no longer permitted him to live alone. He then moved in with his younger brother James Dock Smart ½ a mile down the road. Herb enjoyed watching the Longhorn network and Rodeo on television. He enjoyed his favorite meal of What-a-burger cheeseburger with French fries (do not forget the ketchup).
James Dock cared for his brother until he was called home to be with the Lord on August 17, 2024.
Herb is preceded in death by his father, Robert Smart, his mother Ruby Ponder, an older brother James Braxton Smart. He is survived by his younger brother, James Dock Smart.
The family wishes to thank current caregivers, Ginger and Alfonso Hernandez.
And longtime family caregiver Mary Helen Venegas who cared for the Smart family until her health no longer allowed her to.
A time of visitation will be held in the Chapel of Ramsey Funeral Home at 10am on Friday, August 30, 2024 followed by service with Pastor Wes Willie from Florence Baptist Church officiating at 11am. The graveside service will follow at the Florence City Cemetery 100 Preslar Ave, Florence, TX 76527 at 12:30pm.
