ALBANY - Herbert Giles Steele, affectionately known as "Herb," passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025, in Albany, N.Y., at the age of 94, following a stroke. Born on February 12, 1931, in Cooperstown, N.Y., Herb was known for his personable, friendly nature and ability to elicit laughter, often with his signature exclamation, "Oh my Godfree!"
A proud graduate of Norwich University and Syracuse University, Herb spent his career serving the N.Y.S. Civil Service Department, retiring at 58. He married Nancy C. Tompkins in Liberty, and together they raised three beloved sons: H. John, Leonard L., and Stephen R. Steele. Herb cherished his family deeply, reveling in adventures with Nancy, traveling the world, fishing, golfing – making an incredible seven hole-in-ones – and, later in life, discovering a talent for watercolor painting.
Herb and Nancy treasured their Delmar circle, enjoying many evenings of dinner, cards, and laughter. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy. He is survived by his sons; and his brother, Stephen Steele; as well as cherished grandchildren.
Honoring his humble wishes, his sons returned his ashes to Ashland, N.Y., joining Nancy and his parents. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation, in Herb's memory, to the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY). Give here to a cause close to his heart.
