Herman H. Hertlein, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2024, in North Fort Myers, FL, where he lived for 10 years. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara (Carroll), grandson Shawn McCool, and brother Fred Hertlein. Herman was the devoted father to his adoring children, Christine McCool and her husband Kevin McCool of Woodbury Heights, NJ, Linda D'Alessandro and her husband William D'Alessandro, Jr. of Hopedale, MA. Herman was a loving Poppy to Crystal McCool of Woodbury Heights, NJ, Kayla D'Alessandro-Kennedy and her husband Justin Kennedy of Bellingham, MA, Laura Batallas and her husband Nate Batallas of Hudson, NH. He also leaves his great-grandchildren Hadley, Little Billy, Brooke, Noelle and Shane, and his loving partner Grace Babinchak and their pup Chico for the last decade.
Herman was born in Bronx, NY and raised in Woodbury, NJ. He graduated from Woodbury High School in 1956 and began his career as a draftsman for RCA and later worked for Digital Equipment in Massachusetts. Herman moved back to Woodbury Heights and opened and operated his own car wash in Deptford for 15 years. After the sale of the carwash, Herman began driving a truck for many businesses in South Jersey. Herman and his wife loved to travel and would often be found snowmobiling, boating around the Chesapeake Bay, dancing, and participating in many bowling leagues. He was also a member of the Deptford Elks Lodge #2708. Herman eventually retired to Florida where he became very involved in his community, enjoying Monday and Tuesday night bingo, mid-day swimming, golfing, and cruising around with Grace in their golf cart.
Herman loved pool time with his family and friends. He was infamous for his trickery and antics during pool time and often would be found hiding a squirt gun under his towel. His grandchildren were his greatest joy and he loved to make them laugh with his dance moves and by singing every country song. His loved ones knew his routine to a T, never waste leftover milk as there are always cookies nearby, a ham and cheese sandwich promptly at noon, and "Hattan Time" is always paired with cheese and crackers. Herman was loved and will be sadly missed by all.
Services for Herman will be private under the care of Budd Funeral Home, 522 Salem Avenue Woodbury, NJ 0809.
