Herman Joseph Thomas, 74, son of the late Marnell and Ernestene Thomas (Owensboro, Kentucky), passed away unexpectedly on October 10, at Central Baptist Hospital, following a cardiac event. He and his wife Jeanie were married for 48 years, and they always believed Divine Providence brought them together after meeting while Jeanie was crossing the street. Herman was a devoted father to his son Kyle (Nelya) and proud grandfather of Colten. Herman is also survived by his sister Marna (David) Troutman of Owensboro, niece Tena Beth Martin of Owensboro, nephew Dave (Andi) Troutman, along with their children Ryan, Ali and Avery of Bowling Green, and sisters/brothers-in-law Linda Cordial (Bill Moreland) of Hurricane, West Virginia and Debbie (Rick) McQuady of The Villages, Florida.
A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Herman's career in the telecommunications industry spanned 38 years, starting with GTE which became Verizon, Alltel, and then Windstream. His career took him from Ashland, Kentucky to Atlanta, Lexington, Jacksonville, Tampa, Dallas, and back to Lexington where he retired.
An active man in the community, Herman helped spearhead significant improvements to the South Lexington Junior Baseball League at Shillito Park in 1998. He loved spending time with his family, especially watching his son play sports. He had a passion for the Kentucky Wildcats and thoroughly enjoyed Owensboro barbecue and burgoo. He had a contagious laugh, so contagious everyone got a good laugh along with him.
Herman will be remembered for his love of his family and country. He will be deeply missed.
Private graveside services will be held at the Lexington Cemetery at 11 am on Thursday, October 16.
