Howard Harris Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Chapel - Covington on Dec. 13, 2025.
Howard R. Harris, age 60, of Covington, passed away Friday, December 12, 2025. Born on February 16, 1965, Howard was the beloved son of Neal and Gladys Harris, both of whom preceded him in death. He spent his formative years in Covington, graduating in 1983 from Newton County High School.

Following his graduation, Mr. Harris answered the call to serve his nation as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army. He served with honor and distinction during Operation Desert Storm. Howard's commitment to duty and his unwavering sense of preparedness were hallmarks of his character, both in the military and throughout his life.

Howard was known among family and friends as an avid outdoorsman. Whether hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, he felt most at home beneath the open sky. His resourcefulness and readiness for any situation became legendary among those who knew him best, and he often shared his love for adventure with others.

Howard is survived by his loving sisters, Vickie Cash (Steve) and Susan Gilbert (Tim); his devoted brother, Bob Harris (Lynn); his cherished nieces and nephews, Patrick Gilbert (Kristi), Luke Gilbert (Lindsay), Kasey Cash (Josh), and Hannah Cash; his great nephew, Neal Gilbert; as well as a host of other family members and friends who will deeply miss his warmth, humor, and steadfast presence.

A graveside service honoring Mr. Harris will be held at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Newborn Memorial Cemetery with Mr. Jimmy Worley officiating. The family will receive friends at J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Wednesday, prior to the procession to the cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers will be Patrick Gilbert, Luke Gilbert, John Marshall, Marshall Atha, Carlos Rhodes, Jimmy Worley, Jimmy Harris, and David Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers will be Phil Malcom, and Lance Malcom. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.support.woundedwarriorproject.org

Howard's life was a testament to devotion-devotion to family, country, and the great outdoors. He will be remembered for his generosity, his strength, and his readiness to face whatever life brought his way. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

May he rest in peace.
