Ingrid Amelia Smith

Our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to our beloved sister and friend who passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the age of 70. Ingrid Amelia Smith was born on September 29, 1954 in Newark, NJ and was the cherished daughter of her proud parents, David and Elizabeth Marie Smith.

Ingrid was preceded in death by her father David Smith and our beloved mother, Elizabeth Marie Smith. In addition, she was also preceded by the loss of our brothers: Vance Smith, Derrick Smith, Kenneth McNeil, and Allie McNeil Jr. To carry on the legacy, we have our brothers: Merrick Smith, and our elder Henry "Hank" McNeil, Vernal A. McNeil, Kelly McNeil, Brian A. McNeil & wife, Karen McNeil, Mark R. McNeil, Wendell A. McNeil, Kirk E. McNeil, Eric McNeil, sister Allison McNeil, and a multitude of loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well extended family and friends. Charles Monroe Jones was her estranged husband, whom she married on January 20, 1995.

Ingrid attended and graduated from Central High School in June of 1972. Thereafter, she attained her skills training and certificate as a dental assistant and worked for several years alongside of Dr. Lealon A. Robinson, DMD. She later transitioned her career to phlebotomy. She was employed at St. Michael's Medical Center from June 2004 until December 2016 on the CDC unit, and worked as a phlebotomist where she was highly respected and regarded as one of the best. Ingrid had joined International F. & A.M. Masons and Order of the Eastern Star in Chapter Lady Ellis #67 in March 2012, roll #116, where she held the position of Ruth in her chapter. Although she was active for only a short period of time, due to her demanding work schedule, sometimes being on-call, Ingrid enjoyed her time in her chapter learning and fellowshipping with her sisters. In December 2016, Ingrid was forced into an early retirement due to an acute medical condition. Afterwards, she worked temporarily as a bus attendant aiding children with medical disabilities. She became known throughout her community as a friend and confidant to many.

Ingrid's heart was open to all and so was her home - literally. She was always ready and willing to provide a roof and room for anyone in need, offering not just shelter but safety and comfort. When she chose to do any cooking, her kitchen was a place of good cooking and happy eating with plenty for all. Whenever there were family gatherings, and the music was playing, she was the first to hit the dance floor. She was protective of family and the first to defend and speak out for any injustice and false rumors and gossip. When the matriarch of our family passed, she kept the lines of communication open and her home a place of refuge.

Beloved Sister, beloved friend, you faced many challenges and endured to the end. The Book of Life has now been closed, so go and take your rest. Only God can judge you and He's prepared for you a brand new home. Jehovah knows what is best.
