Irene H. Neuberger, 95, of Ackley, died on January 22, 2025 at Grand JiVante in Ackley.
Irene was born February 10, 1929 on a farm near Lincoln Center, in Grundy County Iowa, daughter of Henry and Ora (DeBerg) Graves. She attended country school in Lincoln Township, and graduated from Dike High School in 1948. After high school, Irene attended and graduated from the Iowa School of Beauty Culture in Des Moines. On March 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lincoln Neuberger at Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in Dike, Iowa. Together, they made their home on a farm near Ackley and raised four sons. Lincoln passed away December 21, 1977.
Irene was a true farm wife – while Lincoln and the boys tended to the fields and livestock, she kept house, kept a garden, kept everyone's schedule, kept up with the constant loads of laundry and most importantly, kept her "boys" well fed and happy with her "meat and potatoes" meals after a long day of farming/chores. In her spare time, she loved to watch her boys play sports, went to many a square dance, created works of art with her sewing machine and made the best chocolate chip cookies for her grandkids. Later in life, she took up golf, did some traveling and became fast friends with the early morning walkers at College Square Mall. Until her health forced her to relocate to a care facility, she was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls where she enjoyed participating in outreach activities and socializing with her church family.
Those left to cherish her memories are her four sons: Darrell (Diane) Neuberger of Garner; Ron Neuberger of Ackley; Marlyn Neuberger of Grayling, MI and Brent (Jackie) Neuberger of West Des Moines. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and her extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; a step-mother Gepka (Van Deest) Graves; her granddaughter Melissa Neuberger Mayland; her brothers, Joe (Elsie), Marvin (Beulah), Raymond (Johanna), Harold, Lawrence (Dorothy), Dennis (Bev) Graves; and sisters Leona (Ed) Gronewold, Evelyn (Garrold) Bootsma and Bev Tanis.
Irene's family is very grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care she received from staff at Grand JiVante in her final years and St. Croix Hospice in her final months.
Irene will be cremated and a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Cards may be sent to her son, Brent, at 3508 Ashworth Rd., West Des Moines, IA 50265. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to the charity of your choice, or consider planting some flowers or a tree in her memory.
