Ivy Chevannes was born Ivy Mae Jaggoo-Singh on May 12, 1944, in Clarendon Jamaica, in a town called Hayes Corn Piece where she attended Hayes Primary school. For the early part of her adult life, she was a stay-at-home mom. After the birth of her son Matthew, she started to work at Sangster's Book store in downtown Kingston. It was there that she met her lifelong friend Dion Rose. She later moved to the location Uptown. In Connecticut following her migration to the U.S., she worked at J&J Newberries department store in Hartford, CT. Following her move to Florida, she began her career at Walmart, relocating to a Walmart in Loganville, Georgia only a few years later, and retiring in 2015. She and her husband, Paul "Pops" Chevannes, were together since 1962 (over 60 years). She has been known by a few names: Miss Ivy, Miss Chevannnuu (for those who could not say Chevannes); Aunt Ivy, but to most people, she was "Moms." She is preceded in death by her parents Lily and William, her siblings Olive, Daphne, Ralph, Raphael, Marilyn, Suzette and her daughter Annie Warburton. She is survived by her husband Paul (Pops); her siblings Audrey, Claudette, Jean and Yvonne; her sons Desmond (Allison), Devon (Comfort), and Matthew (Caryl), and "all her children dem;"32 nieces and nephews, her granddaughters Naomi, Melanie, Debra, Elexus (Lexie) and Kaila (KayKay); her great-grandchildren Kyler, Kylie, Micah, and Amari.
Moms was a mother figure to all who came to her house with her hospitality and love of cooking drew people in and made them want to gather in her presence. When living in Jamaica she would cook a lot of food, enough to feed her family and more for anyone who would stop by; as she would say, if "someone drop in". Moms had a motto, "If you consider them a friend, they are always welcome," and so was the case when it came to our friends. Because of this, our home was the known hangout spot. When we migrated to the U.S., that practice never stopped, and in Connecticut in 1987, Ivy and Paul purchased a home that became the hangout spot part II. In many cases, families and friends would gather in our home following their own Christmas/holiday dinners simply to experience the welcoming embrace and warmth her home provided. Moms especially loved Christmas as this was the time, "all of her children dem would come home." At church services for CBC and Gracepointe she loved praise and worship. Two of her favorite songs were "These are the Days of Elijah" by Judy Jacobs and "Donnie McClurkin Caribbean medley." Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, and entertaining any and everyone that came to her house.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 25, 2023 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Dave Myers officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM prior to the service. Arrangements by Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 670 Tom Brewer Road, Loganville, GA 30052. 770-466-1544.
