J. Haskell Brown, MD, 87, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
He was born on November 7, 1936, in Columbia, SC to the late Dr. Joseph T. Brown and Lilian Brooker Brown.
Dr. Brown was a member of Taylors First Baptist Church. Dr. Brown found joy in knowing that his family accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, confident in the promise of a heavenly reunion.
A man of remarkable work ethic, strong faith, and unwavering family values, Dr. Brown's life was a testament to his love for his Lord, his country, and his family. He met the love of his life, Sandra McGee, at Furman University, where they were classmates. Their union spanned 68 wonderful years, filled with love and mutual respect.
Dr. Brown pursued his medical education at the Medical College of Georgia, followed by an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He served his country with honor as a medical officer in the U.S. Army, earning numerous awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, before his service concluded in 1969.
Upon returning to Greenville, he began his Internal Medicine practice as an original partner with Internist Associates, serving the Greenville community for over fifty years. He was on staff at Memorial Hospital System, and a past president of the staff at St. Francis Hospital, playing a part in the planning and development of the current facility. He volunteered with and supported both the Greenville and Taylors Free Medical Clinic.
Dr. Brown's dedication to his profession, his family, and his faith made him a revered figure in the lives of those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra, daughter, Ann Brown Doppelheuer (Bob); son, James H. Brown II (Debbie); four grandchildren, Meghan Rowe (Joe), Ally Lee (Caleb), Morgan Bunton (Clay) and Emory Doppelheuer; two great-grandchildren, Ella Rowe and Hayes Rowe; two sisters, Mary Bullard (Lawrence) and Martha Brown; a sister-in-law, Betty Brown; a brother-in-law, Carl Hust, and a host of extended family that he loved dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Dr. J. Truman Brown and Fred Brown, and a son, David Russell Brown.
The funeral service will be held to honor him on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., at Taylors First Baptist Church, with visitation prior from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Burial immediately following in the church cemetery.
