Jack Humbles Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory - Greenfield on Feb. 7, 2025.
Jack E Humbles, 89, of Greenfield Indiana, died February 3, 2025.
He was born in Fortville, Indiana on April 12, 1935. He was the son of Forest and Thelma Humbles. He is survived by his brother, Clarence (Janet) Humbles, and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Alva Humbles and Gene Humbles; and sisters Betty Dunlavy and Martha Perkins Mitchell.
Jack graduated from Fortville High School and went on to graduate from Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Indiana. After traveling in Europe, he returned and attended Indiana University where he earned a Masters in Botany. His love of plants led him to work at the Indiana University herbarium and the Rocky Mountain Herbarium, University of Wyoming.
In 1962 he traveled to Tanganyika (now Tanzania) where he taught physics, chemistry, math, biology and health science classes. He enjoyed traveling, teaching and learning the culture of other countries. Throughout his teaching career, he taught in Africa, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Japan. He taught English as a second language at Ohio University through OPIE from 1980 through 1998 when he retired. He continued to travel and visit students and friends from his many years of teaching. He moved to Flagstaff Arizona after retiring from Ohio University and volunteered at NAU's Deaver Herbarium and at the Museum of Northern Arizona, Navajo Nation.
Jack loved hiking, studying plants, bird watching, reading and traveling. A natural teacher, he shared all his interests with family and friends. He will be missed.
