Jack Sawyer Obituary

John “Jack” Sawyer, 81, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, at LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors – Coulter Road Chapel.

Jack was born on June 3, 1944, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to John and Jean Sawyer. He graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1963, where he played both football and baseball. Following graduation, Jack proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a dental technician for four years. After completing his military service, Jack married his first wife, Kris Sawyer, and together they welcomed two sons, Shaun and Derrick. In 1975, Jack married Diana. The two shared nearly fifty years together. They built a beautiful life filled with laughter and adventure, raising two children, Aaron and Nicole. Jack had a diverse and fulfilling career, working in retail, at the Amarillo State Center, and later in real estate after retirement — more for enjoyment than necessity. During his time in Colorado, he also served as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, reflecting his dedication to community and service.

A proud fan of the Denver Broncos, Jack found joy in sports and outdoors. He loved skiing in the Colorado mountains, playing golf, riding motorcycles in his younger years, and dancing with Diana. He was also well known for his sweet tooth — especially for sweet tea, which he enjoyed more than anyone. Above all, Jack was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He gave freely of his time and energy, volunteering as a Boy Scout troop leader and coaching Aaron’s tackle football team. His kindness, humor, and steady presence will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jean Sawyer, and his brother, Bill Sawyer.

He is survived by his wife, Diana Sawyer; his children, Shaun Sawyer and wife Lindsey, Derrick Sawyer, Aaron Sawyer and wife Karen, and Nicole Sawyer; his sisters, Liz Valdez and Lee McDonald; and his cherished grandchildren, Kayla, Tyler, Jaxon, Abby, Aiden, Braylee, and Max.

Jack’s life was one of quiet strength, love, and generosity. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
