Here's to you brother. I miss you more than words can say. After all these years I still have dreams you're back. Its hard losing someone as special, loyal, and so damn genuine as you. You and Ricky are always with me and it's funny because I often feel or experience little reminders of you two and can usually tell right away which one it is. You're more than just a best friend and more than a brother, you're a hero. In loving memory always, your good friend and bro Scott.

Hey brother, just found this site. Growing up together you were always the one who no matter what stayed loyal to your friends. I still think about you all the time and all the good times we had together. Today's YOUR day and as long as I live you'll be right here in memory. I never got to say goodbye before your deployment and think about that all the time. I know you're smiling that goofy smile down from a better place and just want you to know that all the years growing up you left a profound imprint on all our lives. All the times sneaking girls in your basement, you dragging me out in the crazy heat for Frisbee golf, screaming Tupac as we flew down the road to grab more party supplies. We never had a care in the world, we were truly young, wild, and free. Everywhere you went you brought out so much life in everyone of us. I only have a few pictures left of us but that's the Jake I will NEVER FORGET, that's my brother who is up there causing ruckus and playing euchre with Ricky. I love you Jake, this is my formal goodbye to you until we meet again. There will never be another soul as unique and radiant, therefore I will know exactly what to look for when I do come to find you. In your memory, you'll always be my brother with me forever, Scott or as you'd say Scottrow.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Spann Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Jacob D. Spann US Marine Private 1st Class. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

My thoughts are with Jacob's family this Memorial Day. I never had the honor of meeting Jake, but my brother was deployed with him & although it's hard for him, he does speak of Jake at times. Sounds like he was a great guy. Thank you for sharing him! He meant a lot to alot of people.

I have been looking at this web page for the last year. I felt horrible when I heard jacob died. I was in his platoon. I stayed two doors down from him in the barracks at 1/2. I was medically discharged two months before they deployed. But the worst part about this is that when he got to the unit, I was alredy processing out. So Jacob took my spot in the Gun Team. Broussard really worked with Jacob when we picked him up. I have a picture on my bedroom wall of him and Abby standing right outside of his room. I can't look at it without feeling this hole in my chest. I know in my heart that he wouldn't have changed anything that happened that day! But I have gladly taken his place in the HMMWV that night. Or even Parr or Gerena's place. That is the Marine Corps way! We help our brothers! I'm sorry for taking so long to say anything. Thank you for your son and Marine. Semper Fidelis. Spann... I won't forget you!

Dear Deb and Family,
I just wanted you to know that you remain in my thoughts and prayers. I think of Jake often especially when I have a student in my office expressing interest in serving in the Armed Forces. They are so young yet so courageous as was Jake. Although I only had the priviledge of knowing Jake for a short time I am grateful for that. It was evident that he loved his family and friends dearly. I appreciate the scholarship you have made available in Jacob's name to the students at WNHS and I am grateful that you and Abby make it a priority to present it to the recipient each year.
Take care and God Bless You and Yours.

I have yet to write anything in Jake’s guestbook. I’m not really sure why, other than he is in my thoughts every day and I’ve never felt the need to express my feelings in this forum. However, I do read what others care to share. Today would have been Jake’s 23rd birthday and I thought it a good time to address all of those that have written and those that I know read the guestbook.
To those that didn’t know Jake or our family, we thank you for your kind words and prayers. Jake was a very special young man and I wish you could have had the opportunity to know him. To ours and Jake’s friends and our families, Dennis and I both are so appreciative of your thoughts and prayers. Many of you have been there to support us during our darkest hours; our dear friends that were on Jake’s final flight home, our family and friends that have been there to help us deal with our grief over the past year and a half. We will always be grateful. To Abby and her family, thank you for continuing our friendship. You will always be very special to us.
To our children, even through all of the pain that you have had to deal with, you have been there for Dennis and me. You give us strength and hope for the future. You have given us the realization that even though Jake is not physically here with us, he lives on in each of you and our beloved grandchildren. You are all such a blessing.
To my husband Dennis, you have been my rock. You were the one that had to deal with everything when I could not, even though you were also suffering. You were there for Jake for 18 years; thank you for helping me raise such a fine young man. I don’t know what I’d do without you.
Finally to our Jake, I know you hear me talk to you and this is no different. I once again stood before your grave this morning, still in amazement the emotions that this evokes. Twenty-three years ago you came into this world and it seems like just yesterday. Your life seemed to flash before me and I still can’t believe that you are gone. Maybe because you still seem to be such a huge part of our lives. I can still hear your laugh and see that smile as if you were standing in front of me. The grandkids point to your pictures and say “Uncle Jake” as if they see you often. We were blessed to have you with us as long as we did. You know how proud we are of you and how much we all love you. We miss you terribly but are comforted by the fact that you are waiting for us. This life here is short, we’ll see you soon.
Proud Mom of LCpl. Jacob D. Spann

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain, so I will not pretend that I know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the Spann family and friends, I didn't know Jacob, but after reading these tribute pages I have a much deeper understanding of my feelings about him. I was the loadmaster on the aircraft that had the honor and privilege of bringing him out of Iraq to begin his journey home. You should know that he was at all times treated with the highest dignity and respect. It was my distinct honor to accompany him and even though, as I said, I didn't know him personally, I have felt like I have known him in spirit since that horrible day. God bless you, all of America's men and women who serve, and especially all who support them!

I miss him more then I miss my family members that have passed away. He was truly an inspiration to all of us machinegunners. Even though we have never met I feel as if we are part of a “family”. My daughter’s fiancee was killed by an IED in Iraq in Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that God will hold you as close to His heart as He has held my family these past months. May you feel His love and comfort as you pass through these difficult days.
God bless our Marines,

To Jacob's family:
When I think of how selfish and spoiled I was at Jacob's age, I am truly humbled by this mighty warrior that gave his life so my family can worship, pray, and live freely in this great country. Well done and thank you for the blessing you raised up in this world and who now is raised up by Our Father in Heaven!
