Jacqueline D. Keating, age 74, of
Watertown, NY passed away on February 24, 2025 at the Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown.
Born in London, Ontario, Canada, Jacqueline (Jacquie) was the daughter of William and Lucienne (Séguin) Dionne. She spent her childhood in London and Cornwall, Ontario, before immigrating with her parents to the United States in the 1960s. The family settled in Potsdam, NY, and Jacquie received her high school diploma from the Potsdam Central School District. Growing up bilingual, Jacquie decided to pursue an education in modern languages. She earned her bachelor's degree in French Language and Literature from the State University of New York College at Potsdam (now SUNY Potsdam), a diploma in French Studies from the Université de Poitiers in Poitiers, France, and her master's degree in French Language and Literature from Middlebury College, in Middlebury, VT.
Jacquie spent her entire career teaching French at the high school level in the General Brown Central School District. In her first few years of teaching there, she met her future husband, F. Anthony (Tony) Keating, of
Watertown, NY. The couple married at St. Mary's Church, in Potsdam, in 1975. They settled in Watertown, and had two children, Katherine and John.
Jacquie taught French at General Brown for 35 years, and she loved working with her students, directing school plays, and traveling with her students to Ontario and Québec, as well as several overseas trips to the United Kingdom and France. After retiring from teaching, Jacquie worked as a translator in a number of legal proceedings, including at the U.S. District Court in Syracuse, NY. She also performed simultaneous, consecutive, sight, and written translations for local businesses, visiting dignitaries and attachés at Fort Drum and at the local Congressional office.
In addition to her professional career, Jacquie was very involved in local civic and charitable organizations, including the Crescent Yacht Club's Junior Division program in Chaumont and the Jefferson County College Women's Club.
Jacquie was a beloved wife, mother, and teacher, and she enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watertown.
She was predeceased by her parents, William and Lucienne. Jacquie is survived by her husband, Tony, her daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Keating and James Bates of Sackets Harbor, her son, John of Watertown, and many cousins and extended family members throughout Canada.
