Born June 8,1962 in Dunn NC to Ernest and Edith
Ann Black. Jim moved with his family to West
Asheville very young. His family being very music
oriented, he started playing instruments at an early
age, playing baritone first, but finding his love for
drums at about 14.
Jim played in the community with his dad, Ernie,
jazz, dance gigs and eventually leading to playing
professionally at 18. Many jam sessions at the Brass
Taps, several bands and too many musicians
throughout his musical journey to mention by name.
For the last several years Jim had been writing and
recording Christian music.
His father, Ernest Guy Black, his mother, Edith Ann
Black and brothers Michael Ernest, and Johnson
Guy Black, predeceased Jim.
He is survived by his brother David Lee Black,
nieces Kitzi Black (Sidney, Shy, and Tierney) and
Savannah Black Brigman (her husband, Hunter,
Avah, Selah, and Edith)
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday,
February 15,2023 at the Chapel of Asheville Area
