James Forrest Burroughs, age 94, of Brighton, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
James was born on February 13, 1931, to Charles and Isabelle Burroughs in Howell, Michigan. He grew up in Pinckney, Michigan, and graduated from Pinckney High School. During his youth, James met the love of his life, Marilyn, at a high school baseball game. The two were married in June of 1951 and shared 66 wonderful years of love and happiness together.
Shortly after their marriage, James was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during the final years of World War II. He was stationed in Germany as part of the occupation forces, and he and Marilyn traveled together during his service. Upon returning home, James and Marilyn began a family, raising two children, Robert and Debra, who were the pride of his life.
James was a dedicated and hardworking man, committed to providing for his family. He became an accomplished carpenter and builder and founded 'Burroughs Better Built Homes,' constructing many homes throughout the area. In addition to his work as a builder, James served as the Deputy Building Official for the Livingston County Building Department for a decade. He retired in 2000 after many years of loyal service.
In his free time, James was a talented woodworker and carver, creating cherished furniture pieces that are still enjoyed by his family and friends. He had a great love for basketball, particularly the Michigan and North Carolina teams, and was always excited for the March Madness season. James also enjoyed solving jigsaw puzzles and completed hundreds over the years, often sharing the joy of this pastime with loved ones.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Trinity Hospice Care for their compassionate care and support during James' final days. Their kindness and dedication were deeply appreciated.
Beloved father of Robert (Holly) Burroughs, and Debra (Jason) Verbison; proud grandfather of Jillian Burroughs, Matthew Burroughs, Rachel Burroughs, Mason Verbison, Curtis Verbison, and Miranda Verbision; cherished uncle of Julie, Jeff, James, and John; dear friend of Lynn. James is also survived by many loving family and friends.
James is preceded in passing by his loving wife of 66 years Marilyn Burroughs, brother Paul Burroughs, and parents Charles and Isabelle Burroughs.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
