Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Oct. 16, 2023.
Affectionately known as "Chill Town JC." Born on July 22, 1952, in Franklin County, North Carolina, to Lonza Carroll and Snowie Virginia Thorn-Neil, James emerged as the eldest among his ten siblings. Soon he ventured north with his family in the 1960s, to be raised in
Cliffwood, New Jersey then settling in
Keyport, New Jersey, he embraced a legacy of loyalty and a strong sense of honor instilled by his parents. James, a man of Christian and humble beginnings. Amidst a large and vibrant family, he developed a deep connection to his roots, surrounded by cousins and relatives, weaving a rich tapestry of shared experiences. Moving to Newark for better opportunities, James, alongside his cousin Junie Wilkins, dedicated themselves to do whatever it takes to supporting their extended families. Renowned for his debonair charm, eloquence, and education, he navigated life with thoughtfulness, always ready to fiercely defend his family, especially his brothers. For over 25 years, James contributed his skills to the New Jersey building laborer's union, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. Proud of his accomplishments, he'd point to buildings and bridges, proudly declaring, "I helped build that." Beyond his professional life, James cherished the love he shared with Lillian Thomas, with whom he had three beautiful children: Latrice, Asuima, and James Jr. Although their paths diverged, their bond remained strong, exemplifying enduring friendship. Amidst life's changes, the true love of James's life emerged in Hope Ann Morey.
James was an alumnus of Essex County College and had a keen interest in watching epic time period movies and TV series like Spartacus, boxing Events with Brother Lorenzo "Sal" Carroll, fishing down the New Jersey Shore, and spending quality face time with his Brother Charles Carroll and his ongoing relationship with his daughter Latrice and her husban Stacy. He especially enjoyed time with his youngest Brother Vince Carol whom he refers to as "his student that became the teacher" and last be not least his spitting image nephew Russell "Rocky" Evans, the oldest son of his late sister Tiny, who took him food shopping on a regular basis and to whom James spent many hours educating about the legacy of our family's history and just good old-fashioned comradery.
In the profound tapestry of James Carroll's life, his legacy reverberates through the hearts of those he held dear: He is survived by his three cherished children: Latrice Carroll-Broughton (Stacy Broughton), Asuima Collins, and James Carroll II. A source of joy and pride, he leaves behind a solid lineage of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Snowie Saunders, Jasmine Saunders, James Carroll III, Tekavis Carroll, Jalila Carroll and Khalio Geddis.
James was deeply connected to his roots, guided by the love and memories of his late parents, Lonza and Snowie Carroll. He shared a special bond with his siblings: Joyce Carroll, the late Jerry Carroll, twin brothers Donnell Carroll (Cynthia Carroll) and Connell Carroll (Cynthia Carroll), sister Delphine Carroll, and twins Lorenzo Carroll (Mary Carroll) and Loretha "Tiny" Carroll-Goldsmith (the Late Malik Goldsmith). Additionally, he is survived by Charles Carroll (Elaine Pinto) and Vince Carroll (Samree Haile). A popular figure, James will be missed by numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles, life relatives, and a vast circle of friends.
In celebrating James Carroll's life, we honor not only the man but the intricate web of connections he fostered. May his memory live on in the hearts of all those touched by his warmth and enduring spirit.
