James Alfred Clunan October 18, 1932 – July 27, 2025 James Alfred Clunan, affectionately known as "Jim", Dad, Pops, or Papa, passed away peacefully in his home on July 27, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on October 18, 1932, in Yazoo County, Mississippi, Jim was known for his endearing "Jim-isms" and his deep love of history. His life was filled with stories of fate, perseverance, and passion, especially for the world of flight, which he discovered at the age of five. Jim’s military service, rooted in his lifelong devotion to aviation and history, was a defining part of his identity, and he proudly shared these stories throughout his life. A devoted history enthusiast, Jim often spoke of his family’s military service and the honors and recognition they earned. He was a lifelong New Orleans Saints fan, always sharing his love for the team with those around him. Jim graduated from Flora High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for 21 years, retiring in 1978 from Meridian Naval Air Station in Meridian, Mississippi. Following his retirement, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by relocating to the beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast, a place he cherished deeply. Jim’s devotion to civil service continued well beyond his military career. After his time in the Navy, he worked at Ingalls Shipbuilding, where he contributed to the nation's defense and development. His commitment to service extended into his tenure at the U.S. Census Bureau, where he helped ensure accurate and essential data collection for communities nationwide. Jim lived by the belief that “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth!” and his life embodied this ideal through his decades of service to his country and community. Jim met the love of his life, Norma Jo Ann Harris, in 1959, and the two were married for 49 years until her passing in 2008. Together, they raised three children: Jamie Goodwin (Billy), Randy Clunan, and Jackie Rushing. Jim was immensely proud of his four grandchildren: Deven Rushing (Chelsea), Bailey Clunan, Jack Clunan, and Carsyn Clunan. He cherished the special bond he shared with his two great-grandchildren, Briggs Jackson Rushing and Hadley Grace Rushing. Later in life, Jim found love again with Patricia Wheeler Clunan, whom he fondly referred to as his “young bride.” They spent 15 years together, enjoying retirement, rekindling friendships, and making memories while fulfilling their shared bucket list. Jim also held a deep love for his nieces—Michelle Clunan Mack, Linda Gould Nickerson, and Lisa Gould Seymour—and his grandniece, Jennifer Clunan Nave, whom he cherished dearly. Throughout his career in the Navy and his subsequent roles in civil service, Jim had the opportunity to travel the world, gaining a greater appreciation for different cultures and forming lasting friendships along the way. He found particular joy in volunteering at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum in Monroe, Louisiana, where he shared his experiences and stories as a part of the museum’s mission. Jim’s impact on his family and friends was profound, and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him. His kindness, generosity, and quick wit made him a beloved figure to all who crossed paths with him along his journey. Whether it was his lighthearted "Jim-isms," his wealth of stories, or his genuine care for others, Jim made every interaction meaningful. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. Jim will be greatly missed, but his spirit will remain alive in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his honor to the Chennault Museum, Attn: Nell Callaway, 701 Kansas Lane, Monroe, LA 71203
