NEWPORT NEWS – James R. Cochran (Jimmy) died Sunday, February 25, 2024.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Patricia Hanna Cochran and Dr. James R. Cochran; sister, Patricia James Cochran; and uncles, Rev. Don Michael Hanna, and John Alexander Hanna, Jr (Kathryn Hanna). He is survived by his daughters Kelsey Marie Cochran and Jeanenne Nichole Cochran; his grandson Jacob Sweatman; his sisters, Michele Agnes Cochran (Ben Weeks), Deirdre Moira Cochran, and Brigid Cochran-Parado (Randy); brother-in-law, Judd Barton; nephew, Michael Parado; niece, Hanna Parado; his dog Boatswain ("Boson"), as well as multiple cousins and close friends. Jim graduated from Warwick High School and the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School. He was a member of the Apprentice Alumni Association and had served as president (2016-2017). He also actively participated in Habitat for Humanity for many years. Some of his hobbies included winning bullets in sailboat racing, golfing best ball with good friends, boating on the James River, and socializing out in town. While he was always good for a laugh, some good smack-talk, and a dose of heckling, Jim truly lit up the room with his infectious joy, generous spirit, mischievous grin, and a good word of appreciation. He will be remembered most for his determination, strong work ethic, thoughtfulness, and a keen ability to make others feel like family.
The viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 at Amory Funeral Home in Yorktown. The funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Newport News, with reception following at Warwick Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23508-5216. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Yorktown.

I was surprised to hear Jim had passed. Hope he got enjoy some retirement! He was General Foreman in the area where I first did Make-up Foreman at NNS. He gave me a chance and always supported me in the work we did in that area. I as made Foreman, I would see him from time to time and he always asked about how things were going. Although our paths didn't cross as much later, he always spoke, had a smile, talked for a bit. Jim was always a good guy and great mentor! Prayers for his family on his loss!

We just heard of Jim's passing from the neighbor that lives between his house and ours. We are so very sorry to learn of his passing. He was on the Tabb Lakes Board with my husband, always had a smile, loved seeing him walk his dog, and was kind enough to share his homemade eggnog with us every Christmas. We are so sorry we didn't know of his passing sooner so that we could have paid our respects. We will definitely miss our wonderful neighbor. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I´ve known Jim, and all of the Cochrans, since we were very small children, growing up, playing, and attending school in Hilton Village. I don´t think I´ve ever seen him without a beautiful smile on his face. Always so nice, and so kind. My heart is with you all, Michelle, Deirdre, and Brigid.

I am so very sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing. We will all miss him especially around sailing season. I admired him very much for devoting time with his beloved grandson- getting him to and from summer sailing camp at Youth Sailing- we had some great chats over the years- always about family and sailing. He just beamed whenever he spoke of his family. My sincere condolences to all his family. Rosemary Petty Hobart
