James Gary Evans

James Gary Evans, 88, passed away peacefully in Ogden with family by his side on August 2, 2024.

Born April 17, 1936, in Ogden, Gary was the only son of James Alma and Dolly Olive Neuberger Evans. Raised and schooled here, Gary graduated from Ogden High School Class of 1954 and went on to attend Weber College, where he received an associate degree. He then attended Utah State University where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Gary enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Reserves from 1954 to 1963, being honorably discharged as a Specialist. He transitioned to Hill Air Force Base where he worked for many years as a Contract Negotiator for the United States Air Force, retiring in 1990.

Gary met the love of his life, Sharon Sue Bargerhuff, on a blind date. After asking “Susie” several times to marry him, she finally relented, and they were married April 25, 1961. They welcomed their first child, John Eric, in 1963, and their daughter, Laurel J., joined the family in 1970. Gary and Susie enjoyed spending time with their children, having dinners with friends, and traveling as a family.

Gary was very conscientious, detail-oriented, and dedicated to researching the best options, whether negotiating at work or taking care of the family finances.

He will be remembered for his loving care of his children and being a wonderful father and even taking care of the mothering tasks for many years, as his sweetheart passed away in August of 1983.

Gary and Sharon are together again after 41 years apart.

Dad, we love you and we’ll miss you, but we’re glad you’re with Mom again.

The family acknowledges and appreciates all who have provided care and support during this tender time.

Gary is survived by his children, John E. Evans, Riverdale; and Laurel J. (Stan) Buchanan, Mountain Green; three grandchildren, A.J. (BreAnne) Buchanan, Keenyon Buchanan, and GinaTia Buchanan; three great-grandchildren, Jaidyn, Kambrie, and Xander. In addition to his wife, Gary was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside military honors will be accorded at 1 pm on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Friends are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life Memorial on Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Community Center at Lindquist’s Office Building, 3434 Washington Blvd.
