James J. "Sudsy" Fiume, 100, of Pittston, PA, passed away peacefully at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Scranton, PA, on August 21, 2025 with his son by his side.
He was born in Pittston on March 27, 1925 to the late Michael and Helen Chabak Fiume and was a graduate of Pittston High School. In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie; his brothers, Leonard and Anthony; and nephews Barry, Michael, and James R. Fiume.
James is survived by his son, James Fiume and wife, Monice, Ashburn, VA; grandchildren Jimmy, Washington DC, and Matthew (Libby), Leesburg, VA; four nephews; and several cousins.
He served in World War 2 as a Combat Engineer and was awarded the Soldiers Medal for saving a fellow soldier. He then continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserve 300th Field Hospital for 35 years. He was a life member, Fourth Degree Knight, and past President of the Home Association of the Knights of Columbus, Pittston Council #372, and he was a faithful member of St. Rocco's parish, where he served as an altar server as a child and in his later years until the church closed. James worked at PennDot as a State Electrical Inspector for over 25 years, travelling the entire state.
James played football at Pittston High School, and then played college football briefly at a school in Georgia before entering the service. He was an avid fan of Penn State and frequently attended games. More importantly, he loved watching his grandsons play football, and would often ask them about the position they played.
James' family would like thank the nurses and staff at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for their dedicated care during his time at the facility.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gino J. Merli Residents' Welfare Fund.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Graziano Funeral Home, 700 S. Twp. Blvd, Pittston, PA 18640.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday August 29,2025 from 5-7 at the funeral home.
The funeral services will begin at the funeral home at 9am on Saturday, August 30. Those who plan on attending are asked to be at the funeral home by 8:45 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 in St. Joseph Marello Parish ( Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church), 237 William St, Pittston.
Interment will follow at St. Rocco's Cemetery.
