JAMES “JIM” CLARK MITCHELL
Jackson, TN: James Clark Mitchell age 84 passed away December 30, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born August 30, 1939, in Bemis, TN, the son of the late Johnnie and Mary Ruth Tims Mitchell. He was a member of the first graduating class at Southside High School in 1957.
He joined the US Navy in Sept. 1958, served four years and was assigned to a Nuclear Weapon Division. Upon his return from Military duty, he attended U.T. Knoxville where he earned a B.S. Degree in Business.
While he was in college, he met Jennie Sue Emrich and they married on June 5, 1965.
He worked for E.I. Dupont in Nashville as a cost accountant from January 1966 until October 1967.
The family moved back to Jackson, TN and he began working for Lambuth College as V. P. of Business Affairs from January 1967until October 1986. He then worked at Brownsville HCA Hospital as Business Office Manager from October 1986 until 1982. He finished his working career at Regional Hospital in Jackson as Controller from October 1987 until November 2000.
He enjoyed reading, old movies, golfing, traveling, 50’s and 60’s music, and visiting with family and friends.
He was a Charter member of the Bemis Historical Society and was actively involved with the restoration of the old theater into the Bemis Museum.
He attended First Baptist Church in Henderson.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Jennie Sue Emrich Mitchell of Jackson; three sons, John Mitchell and wife Amy of Madisonville, KY, Robert Mitchell and wife Kim of Luray, TN and Mark Alper of New Brunswick, NJ; two daughters, Suzanne Heavner and husband, Anthony of Olive Branch, MS and Janna Friend and husband Russ of Cedar Grove, TN; grandchildren, Dalton Mitchell and wife Madison, Collin Heavner and wife Natalie, Jake Heavner, Summer Mitchell, Brayden Friend and Riley Friend and one great grandchild, Avery James Mitchell; a sister, Alice Arnett and husband Jerry Laster of Murfreesboro, TN; brother-in-laws, Charles Arnett of Jackson and Garney Scott, II of Nashville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Carolyn Scott, a grandchild Aubrey Mitchell in 2002 and stepmother, Serena Grace Mitchell.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue Chapel.
Burial will follow at New Union Cemetery at Medon, TN.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue Tuesday 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM service time.
In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
