James A. Johanson, Jr., passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on January 17, 1940, in Philadelphia, PA, he was a man who lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his profession.

James was the beloved husband of Mary Johanson (nee Dopirak) for 58 remarkable years. Together, they built a family founded on love and mutual respect. He was a guiding light to his seven children: Maria Kieffer (Bob), James III (Michele), Robert Johanson (Kim), Michele Kean (Todd), Jeanine Whitman (Shawn), Melinda Johanson, and Brian Johanson. His legacy continues through his thirteen grandchildren: Tara Horst (Trevor), Alexander Kieffer, Olivia Kieffer, Briana Johanson, Jacob Johanson, Nathan Johanson, Ethan Whitman, Madelynn Whitman, Charlotte Whitman, Rosalie Whitman, Lillian Whitman, Gabriel Whitman, and Eleanor Johanson, as well as his two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Delta Horst.

James was born and raised in North Philadelphia, where he excelled academically, graduating at the top of his high school class. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Drexel University, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career and a lifelong passion for innovation and problem-solving.

A patriot at heart, James served his country as a 1st Lt and paratrooper in the US Army. His service was a testament to his bravery and commitment to the nation. Following his military service, he embarked on a career as an electrical engineer at the US Naval shipyard. His professional journey continued as he became the former president and a long-time employee of Spectrum X-Ray in Westville, NJ. Even after his retirement from the Defense Logistics Agency after 42 years of service at the age of 81, he remained a respected figure in his field.

His interests were as varied as they were rich; he had a particular fondness for crossword puzzles and a love for all kinds of animals. Over the years, he welcomed many pets into his home, and he leaves behind his beloved dogs, Kato and Dusty, who were cherished companions.

James was predeceased by his parents, James and Clara Belle Johanson, Sr., his twin sister Janet Nelson, and his brother Kenneth Johanson. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

James A. Johanson, Jr.'s life was one of purpose, love, and service. He will be deeply missed by all, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were touched by his remarkable journey. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has made on the world and the countless hearts he has warmed.

James' viewing will be on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Earle Funeral Home, 122 W. Church St., Blackwood, NJ from 10:00 – 11:00 AM followed by his Prayer Service which will begin at 11:00 AM.
