James Edward Johnston, born on May 31, 1945, in the humble town of Ethel, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025, in Brandon, Mississippi. A man of integrity and warmth, James's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, hard work, and dedication to family.
James's early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Ethel, where he developed the strong values that would guide him throughout his life. His journey led him to Pearl High School, where he graduated, fostering friendships and knowledge that would last a lifetime.
Upon completing his education, James embarked on a fulfilling career as a local truck driver, a role he embraced for two decades. His commitment to service and his unparalleled work ethic made him a respected figure in the community. In 2004, James retired, but he was not one to sit idle. He found joy and purpose in splitting wood for firewood, a task that kept him active and engaged with the world around him.
James's life was enriched by music and nature. He was known for his love of playing the guitar, an instrument that gave voice to his soulful spirit. James also found solace in the outdoors, taking pleasure in the simple task of cutting grass, which connected him to the earth he cherished.
Family was the cornerstone of James's life. He was a loving father to his children, Nathan Johnston of Richland, Greg Johnston of Pearl, and Jennifer Whatley (Richard) of Richland. His legacy extended through his cherished grandchildren, Devin Whatley (Niki) of Florence, Toni Johnston of Pearl, Sabrina Padgett (Casey) of Mendenhall, Nathan Johnston, II (Olivia) of Florida, Olivia Bennett (Joe) of Richland, and Jeri Johnston of Pearl. The joy of James's life multiplied with the birth of numerous great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
James was the beloved brother of Bobbie Saxton of Canton, Diane Johnson in Madison, Gennie George (Pete) of Pearl, Gerald Johnston (Alice) of Pelahatchie, and Charles Fowler of French Camp. His family ties were a source of strength and happiness throughout his life.
Preceding James in death was his wife of 59 years, Mary Joyce Johnston, a true partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. James was also predeceased by his parents, Chris and Mary Johnston, as well as his siblings, Patricia Downs, Mary Fowler, Betty McQueen, Chris Johnston, and Frank Johnston.
James Edward Johnston lived a life marked by unwavering commitment to his family, his work, and his passions. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has made on all of our lives. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Sebrell Funeral Home with graveside services following at Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 8 p.m. Friday, October 3, 2025 and 12 Noon Saturday.
