On February 1, 2022, we said our goodbyes to James Kenyon. Instead of telling you about his birthplace, his school of graduation, his employment, or his surviving family, I want people to know the great man he truly was. If you were lucky enough to know Jim and his wife, Shirley, then you were blessed.
Jim retired from a successful life of hard work in 2005. Upon his retirement most days Jim could be found in the woods. Whether it be on a tractor, running a chain saw or cutting lumber on his sawmill. Jim and Shirley took great pride in harvesting the wood off their own property to build their dream home and one of their greatest enjoyments was a picnic they held every July at their home for friends and neighbors.
He enjoyed bowling on many leagues and achieved the highest score of 300 twice. He and Shirley traveled to many bowling alleys for tournaments, always having a good time with friends and family.
Asa conservationist Jim believed in managing his wood lots for future generations. He was presented with the Forest Achievement Award from the DEC in 2009. He was still planting trees at the age of 77 knowing that he would not be around to see them grow to maturity. He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a lifelong hunter and as he got older, he enjoyed hosting hunters and passing along his knowledge to the next generation.
There would never be enough time or words to describe this man. He was generous, giving, compassionate, kindhearted, and honest. He truly loved people, especially children. He was willing to help anyone with anything, his favorite being a new wood or building project. Between him and his best friend John L. there was nothing that they couldn't build or fix. As a team they were very innovative and were happiest when they figured out how to make something work for whatever project they were working on and there were many!
Jim leaves behind many people who loved him. I hope you were one of the lucky ones who knew him and got to feel the love and friendship of a good man.
Per Dad's wishes, his and my mother's ashes will be combined and sprinkled in their woods. There will be no service or funeral. If you would like to remember Jim in the spirit in which he lived please consider donating to a charity of your choice.
