James Richard Knorp, a resident of Panama City, Florida, passed away at the age of 78 on August 11, 2025. Born on November 13, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the eldest of nine siblings and the beloved son of Marjorie Jean (Bishop) Knorp and Bernard Shea Knorp.

James is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Kathryn Ann (Olivier) Knorp; his children, Kristen Marie (King-Knorp) Stewart, Maya Christie (Welles) Schilder, Tollman Joseph Owens; his sons-in-law, Gregory Travis Stewart and Robert Monroe Schilder; and his treasured grandchildren, Zachariah Christopher Freeland, Macy Rose Schilder, Caleb James Stewart, and Connor Gregory Stewart. James is also survived by his siblings and [spouses], John Knorp [Patricia], Kathleen (Knorp) Haller [James], Joseph Knorp [Barbara], Jerald Knorp [Mary],Bernard Knorp [Christine], Martin Knorp, Margaret (Knorp) Platz [Christopher], Janet (Knorp) Blake, and Christopher Knorp.

Family was at the heart of James' world. He had a way of being there for everyone in the moments that mattered most. From helping raise his siblings to being a devoted father, loving husband to Kathryn, and proud grandfather, James touched the lives of countless people. He loved sharing his stories, humor, and wisdom with those he held dear.

James was raised in the Catholic faith and carried its values throughout his life. He was kind, patient, and deeply committed to helping others.

James earned a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Throughout his career, he worked with individuals struggling with substance abuse, dedicating himself to supporting their recovery. He played a role in the early development of the CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) credentialing, a standard that continues to guide counselors in the field today.

James served his country in the United States Army Reserve from August 18, 1966, to August 16, 1968. His service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal, Marksman (Rifle), and Sharpshooter (Tank Weapon) qualifications. He carried the discipline and integrity he homed in the Army into every aspect of his life.

Music was James's lifelong companion. For more than fifty years, he played guitar and sang the folk and rock songs he loved. Whether on a small stage or in a living room with family, he made music that brought people together. He had a gift for turning familiar melodies into memories.

The family will celebrate James's life in a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a local social services organization or a music education program in his honor.
