James Lyle Krause
July 6, 1953 – March 4, 2026
James Lyle Krause, a man whose personality was as big as the Texas sky he loved, passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 72.
Born on July 6, 1953, in La Grange, Texas, to Alfred and Hildegard Krause, James grew up in Giddings with his brothers, Ken and John. The trio was legendary for their mischief, though James eventually channeled that energy into the football field, where he was a standout star for the Giddings High School Buffaloes.
An Unbreakable Bond
The cornerstone of James's life was his family. On September 28, 1996, he was united in marriage with his soulmate, Meri, in Austin, Texas. Their bond was truly unbreakable; they were partners in every sense of the word. Together, they shared a deep love for the outdoors, spending their happiest years hunting, fishing, and cherishing the quiet, sun-drenched moments at the ranch. Though Meri preceded him in death, their reunion in faith is a comfort to all who knew them.
Life of Service and Smiles
James dedicated 30 years of hard work to TxDOT as a Printing Press Operator in the General Services Division. While many look at retirement as a time to slow down, James simply shifted gears. He joined the team at Cabela's in Buda, where he spent the last 15 years as a firearms inspector.
To James, Cabela's wasn't just a job; it was a stage. He was the man with the "winning smile" who never met a stranger, greeting every customer like an old friend. Just this past December, he was honored for his 15-year milestone, a testament to the joy he found in his coworkers and his community.
The Great Outdoorsman
If James wasn't at work, he was likely lost in the brush of the Texas Hill Country. An avid hunter and fisherman, he spent his life "on the hunt" for the elusive trophy buck. His favorite place on earth, however, was his own property in Buda. He spent countless hours patrolling the land on his Polaris, with his faithful best buddy, Buck Ranger, riding shotgun.
A Legacy of Love
Above all, James was a man of deep faith, a proud dad, and the "biggest fan" in the stands for his grandchildren. He was a man of big character who would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it.
James is survived by his sons Justin Krause and wife Meri, Marcus Krause and wife Tacy; grandchildren Hunter Krause, Brooke Krause, Brynnley Krause; his brothers Ken Krause and wife Becky, John Krause and wife Marilyn; as well as a large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Meri Krause, and his parents, Alfred and Hildegard.
James will be remembered for his infectious laugh, his willingness to help anyone in need, and a character that left an impression on everyone he met. He leaves behind a trail of stories, a few "big fish" tales, and a family that will miss his big smile every single day.
